The Staff Engineer - Preliminary Design Mechanical leads mechanical development for early engine designs within the Preliminary Design organization. This role incorporates creation of technical analysis necessary to build preliminary engine feasibility, cross-sections, weight, and mechanical trade studies. The Staff Engineer demonstrates accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives to develop innovative preliminary design concepts, simultaneously meeting aggressive cost and performance / weight targets for key next generation engine applications from TG0 to TG3. This will require collaboration with systems engineering and technologists across the Future of Flight organization along with members of GE Aerospace's global engineering team.
Essential Responsibilities
- Work with global engineering teams to understand advanced technologies and their implications on next generation products.
- Conduct design studies of appropriate fidelity and project analysis with minimal guidance, meeting business standards and requirements.
- Lead teams to balance financial and engineering goals, including designers, engineers, and analysts. Create plans to meet technical needs, solve problems, and report status to leadership.
- Provide technical guidance, review, and mentorship. Ensure utilization of business and organization best practices and design practices. Ensure study outcomes are properly documented.
- Lead a cross-functional team of adjacent disciplines (Aerothermal, Mechanical, Cost, Systems, Project, Sourcing) to drive optimal engine design & cost to meet technical and business objectives
- Own the cross-section for preliminary design architecture studies, including weight roll-ups and mechanical component sizing, to support successful execution of program deliverables
- Monitor and communicate project status, business issues and significant developments
- Lead weight reviews and audits as required for customer commitments and design space studies
- Lead the development and integration of parametric tools to enable parametric design space exploration and optimization studies
- Prepare invention disclosures to protect technology that gives the business a competitive advantage, as well as protecting the intellectual property rights of the company
- Lead or participate in organizational efforts in assigned projects and / or tasks
Qualifications / Requirements
Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering from an accredited University or CollegeMinimum of 5 years of experience in an engineering, supply chain, or manufacturing positionLegal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
