Our client is looking for a Radio Technician to provide specialized technical and comprehensive support, consultation, and training services for staff on P25 and analog conventional radio systems that are owned and operated by the client. This position involves extensive field work and travel, with hands-on work in installing and maintaining these systems. The role supports radio needs in wildland firefighting and public safety operations and works closely within the Radio Program, facilities management, and with vendors for lifecycle management of radio-based systems. The person in this role may assist in directing vendors when required.
Responsibilities
- Support, configure, maintain, and install radio systems and related technologies; develop, recommend, and implement standards for radio systems across multiple divisions.
- Assist in managing radio systems including repeaters, handheld radios, mobile radios, vehicle repeaters, base stations, and other related technologies.
- Provide guidance on interoperability of radio equipment and frequencies; assist in developing requests for purchase and administer FCC frequency licenses.
- Monitor and respond to trouble / help tickets; perform yearly maintenance and programming; assist customers with radio requests; install vehicle and office radios and other technical work required to manage the radio fleet.
- Utilize test equipment such as multimeters, radio service monitors, antenna analyzers, power meters, and other radio testing tools.
- Assist with programming radios and firmware; assist with equipment maintenance at owned tower sites when required.
- Collaborate with vendors and staff to ensure systems align with industry standards in all areas of radio technology.
- Coordinate with the Radio Program Administrator for dispatch or aviation-related radio issues; assist with installation and implementation of new radio systems as needed.
- Install mobile radios in vehicles and base stations in owned or leased facilities as required.
- Maintain inventory of Code Plugs for programmable radios; coordinate with the Radio Program Frequency Specialist for proper frequency compliance.
- Assist with on-site radio asset management; support site surveys to identify needs and propose changes; serve as a point of contact for emergency back-up resources in system failures.
- Coordinate with the Radio Program Inventory Specialist to ensure assets are captured in the inventory system; provide training and technical assistance for radio communications systems department-wide.
- Stay current with radio technologies; engage with industry professionals, vendors, and manufacturers to maintain expertise.
- Act as liaison between department users and Radio Program staff; maintain relationships with other agencies to share information and leverage expertise.
- Attend training, conferences, and read technical publications to maintain a high level of expertise; share knowledge with staff.

NOTE : Candidates must be current WI residents or willing to relocate prior to starting the role. This position requires a significant amount of day-to-day travel, visiting offices across the state to perform maintenance and repairs. Some overnight travel may be required as this is a statewide resource; travel will be reimbursed.
