Collections Construction Technician

Collections focused construction support for exhibitions, historic properties, and exceptional experiences

The following responsibilities describe the general nature of work for employees in this position, but this is not intended as an exclusive or all-inclusive inventory.

• Prepare, build, and demolish gallery and aesthetic walls, floors, and doorframes for exhibitions, including patching, finishing, and painting walls, locating, and moving gallery furnishings, and implementing exhibition designs.
• Construct, erect, install, renovate, maintain, and paint structures made of wood, drywall, steel stud framing, plastics, and other construction materials.
• Support and assist the Construction Services Manager, contractors, and painters.
• Measure, cut, assemble, and finish lumber, trims, and fixtures needed for the museum and historic outbuildings projects.
• Load, unload, and transport materials, tools, and equipment.
• Handle miscellaneous construction duties associated with temporary and permanent exhibition projects.
• Work within the Collection Support preparator crew with appreciation of the team and its mission.

Required skills :

Education and / or experience : A professional level of knowledge is needed in a specialized field, equivalent to that which would be acquired by completing a two-year college or trade program and two years of job-related experience.

Physical demands of the work environment :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, feel, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, climb, or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and / or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.
