Overview
Non-exempt (compensatory and / or overtime eligible; additional compensation to include annual work boot allowance); full-time; 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday; 7 : 00 a.m. – 3 : 30 p.m.; full-benefits
This position involves independent on-site technical inspection of residential and non-residential building installations approvals as required by State and County regulations and requirements. Supervision is received from the Chief Building Inspector or designee.

Responsibilities
Inspect building installations during construction and examine completed installations for use of proper materials and proceduresParticipates in the residential inspection of building, plumbing, electrical and other possible tradesPerform building plan reviews on commercial projects and other structuresMaintain records of inspections within electronic computer systemCheck plans and specifications for building installationsConfer with the Chief Building Inspector on difficult enforcement problemsRespond to electronic, telephone and in-person inquiries regarding building code requirements and other departmental issuesDrive a County vehicle to various sites throughout the County to inspect building installations during construction and upon completion to assure the use of proper materials and procedures (may tour sites on foot, climb ladders and stairs, work from scaffolds, etc.)Prepare and maintain forms and reports related to inspections performedAccess the permits tracking system and other automated data sources to research, review and verify informationPerform other related duties as requiredMinimum Qualifications and Requirements :
High school graduation, or the equivalentMinimum 5 years of work experience on a variety of building installationsPossession of the following certifications or the ability to obtain the following certifications within six (6) months :ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1ICC Commercial Building Inspector – B2Possession of a valid automobile operator's licenseKnowledge / Skills / Abilities :
Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privilegesConsiderable knowledge of the methods and practices involved in installing, repairing and maintaining a variety of building installationsWorking knowledge of the International Building CodeAbility to effectively understand and interpret building plans and specificationsAbility to determine any violations of applicable codes and ordinances; to evaluate corrective actions and to approve work in terms of the International Building CodeAbility to effectively access and utilize computerized systems and equipmentAbility to develop and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, co-workers, and the general publicEffective spoken and written (English) communication skillsPreference May Be Given For :
Work experience as a building inspectorPhysical Requirements / Working Conditions :
While working in this position, the employee is constantly driving; frequently sitting, walking, stooping / kneeling / crouching, reaching and performing repetitive motions; occasionally climbing; and rarely crawling, lifting up to 20 pounds; and pushing and pulling up to 40 poundsWhile working in this position, the employee is frequently indoors and outdoors, walking on uneven ground, working in dusty and noisy environments; occasionally hot temperatures above 100 degrees and cold temperatures below 32 degrees and working near machinery; rarely working in confined spaces, at heights and below ground level, near chemicals or fumes, and may be required to wear protective equipmentAvailable for varied working hours as neededThis position is subject to random drug testingAbility to maintain all required certifications during tenure of employmentAn employee of the Department of Permits and Inspections may not hold an active license or have any interest with a business corporation as described in the original posting.
