School Resources Officer
Serves as School Resources Officer; plans, organizes, and leads special programming such as Explorer Cadets program, summer camp, DARE, gang resistance, social media safety, etc.; coordinates with MADD on programs to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics; establishes rapport and trust with faculty, staff, parents and students; performs counseling with student and parents; advises faculty and staff on safety, laws, and related issues; performs investigations in schools, coordinates with Teen Court and prepares special juvenile reports; mentors students; participates in discipline discussions; participates in coordinating security coverage for after school events; performs gang resistance programming and gang intelligence work. May fill in for other roles in the Sheriff's Office. Additional Job Duties Performs other related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of state and federal laws, local ordinances and policies of the department, especially relating to search and seizure, civil process, serving papers, pursuit, arrest and other specialized law enforcement programs. Considerable knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, methods and equipment. Working knowledge of the application of information technology to law enforcement work. Specialized knowledge and training in the area of assignment such as assistant shift supervisor, civil process, SRO, court security and bailiff, etc. Knowledge of staff coaching, training and mentoring. Knowledge of civil process laws and methods including executions. Skill in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment and in the application of de-escalation and self-defense tactics. Skill in collaborative conflict resolution and teamwork. Skill in public speaking and public education programming. Ability to work with more independence in programming or other activities. Ability to plan programs and deliver interesting presentations appropriately targeted to the age and needs of each group. Ability to act with sound judgment in routine and emergency situations. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms. Ability to present effective court testimony. Ability to prepare clear and concise activity reports. Ability to build and maintain cooperative and effective public relations with the citizens. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, community groups, school staff and faculty, students, parents, the public, and other public officials. Ability to relate to all ages, education levels, and ethnicities.
Graduation from high school and considerable law enforcement experience supplemented by specialized training in the area of assignment or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Before assignment to sworn duties, employees must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and have completed at least the minimum requirements established by the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
