Description : Summary / Objective
Clinical Laboratory Supervisor of Phlebotomy oversees teams of laboratory assistants who are responsible for collecting blood samples across the entire Watson Clinic Lab operations. The supervisor ensures that the process of drawing blood is performed according to safety and compliance standards. The supervisor also makes sure that the proper equipment is in place for the drawing of blood and verifying patient identification.
Essential Functions
Directs and supervises daily operation of phlebotomy and data entry Creates and maintains a staffing schedule to assure adequate coverage Supervises and instructs staff in the performance of duties
Achieves high level of specimen integrity
Monitors that correct specimens are appropriately ordered and collected
Maintains complete documentation of problems and follows through on problem solving Reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures
Supervisory Responsibility
This position manages Laboratory Assistants and is responsible for the performance management of the employees within the department. In addition, it is the expectation that the supervisor cover any position in the department when necessitated by a staffing shortage. This will include working additional hours to ensure coverage of other shifts.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
Lifting - Must be able to lift above shoulder height up to 10 lbs. as needed. In addition, must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly / cart must be utilized.
Pushing / Pulling - Must be able to push / pull up to 20 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly or cart must be utilized.
Carry weight, lift - Must be able to carry supplies weighing up to 20 lbs. on a daily basis. For items weighing more than 30 lbs., a dolly / cart must be utilized.
Bending / Twisting / Stooping - Must be able to bend / twist / stoop for entire shift in order to perform phlebotomy.
Sitting / Standing - Must be able to constantly stand and bend for several hours in duration. Sitting is appropriate based on workload volume and work being performed.
Smells - Ability to tolerate strong odors when working with patients
Dexterity- Must be able to perform a large amount of repetitive hand movements by utilizing computers and opening / closing specimen containers
Travel
No travel is expected for this position other than occasional travel to corporate sites regarding coverage and employee relations issues.
Requirements :
Required Education and Experience
High school diploma required along with a successful completion of a phlebotomy course.
Preferred Education and Experience
A minimum of 2 years experience as a phlebotomist or medical assistant to include phlebotomy performed on all ages and ability to adapt to multiple computer systems.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
Good understanding of medical terminology and the ability to utilize resources to investigate unusual or unfamiliar test requests. Knowledge of specimen collection techniques and specimen preservation. Good documentation skills required. CPR / BLS Certification.
