Highway Maintenance Worker

WSDOT is currently seeking a skilled maintenance professional to join our maintenance team in Mount Vernon, WA. In this journey-level role, you will play a vital part in preserving and maintaining highway infrastructure to ensure the safety and mobility of the traveling public. Under the guidance of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3, you will operate a variety of specialized highway equipment and tools to perform roadway maintenance, and repairs. This position will also provide the opportunity to lead maintenance crews in the absence of a supervisor, supporting the continuity of operations and crew safety. Success in this role requires a strong commitment to safety, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, effective communication, and technical expertise in roadway maintenance practices and equipment operation.
This position will work the typical schedule Sunday through Wednesday, 4, 10-hour shifts, 8 PM to 6 : 30 AM. This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors, often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. This position requires quick response times to job sites. Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies. Occasional call-out / call-back for overtime required.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker will :
- Operate class A, B, or C equipment, power tools, and perform manual labor to complete activities such as asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, synthetic materials.
- Perform drainage maintenance and repair on structures like catch basins, culverts, pipes, ponds, sedimentation facilities, swales, ditches, and other types of drainage features; as well as provide for erosion and slide repair.
- Install, maintain, repair guardrail, fences, impact attenuator concrete barriers and other safety features; assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts.
- Remove dangerous trees and provide vegetation management, such as mowing, applying pesticide applications, establishing, maintaining, and repairing landscaped areas, including planting and remediating sites.
- Haul up to 50 pounds of heavy equipment and materials from State right-of-way (ROW) and roadways.
- Perform routine inspections of highway features.
- Use iPad and computers to track, document, account for inventory, inventory highway section features, and report daily work activities.
- Design and set up traffic control for all operations, including full road or bridge closures according to Department and Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards; perform traffic control.
- Remove snow and ice during winter season
Qualifications :
Highway Maintenance Practical knowledge of highway maintenance practices including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal. Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.Equipment Operation Proficiency in operating and maintaining a variety of Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, tools, and vehicles in accordance with WSDOT standards. Demonstrated ability to safely transport heavy equipment and materials between job sites.Traffic Control & Work Zone Working knowledge of traffic control practices following the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to plan and implement safe work zones, including flagging, signage, and use of cones / barrels.Safety Awareness & Compliance Strong understanding of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including confined space entry, fall protection, and hazardous material handling. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.Technical & Administrative Proficiency Skilled in the use of electronic systems for timekeeping, maintenance tracking, inventory management, and cost estimating (e.g., HATS, WZDB, TSMS). Proficient in standard computer applications including Microsoft Office and email communication.In addition to the competencies above, the following are required :
A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with N endorsement without air brake restriction and valid medical card to legal operate state vehicles.Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts / stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Ability to respond to assigned duty station with 45 minutes of an afterhours callout.Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and / or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.It is preferred (not required) that qualified candidates also have :
A valid Traffic Control / Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.A Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License.A Crane Certificate.Why WSDOT :
