This position involves night shifts and weekend coverage. The scheduled hours are 36 per week, with an on-call requirement based on unit needs. If called in, the RN must be able to arrive at the hospital within 1 hour. Southwest General Hospital may experience low census days, potentially resulting in low workload or up to 12 hours of low-census downtime per 2-week pay period.

As an RN in Med Surg at Southwest General Hospital Center, you will be a vital part of our interdisciplinary healthcare team, delivering expert patient assessment, care planning, medication administration, and collaborative treatment. You will manage patient needs throughout hospitalization, focusing on recovery, education, and overall well-being. The unit primarily cares for Med / Surg patients, with a subset of low-volume oncology patients who are managed by core staff rather than travelers.

You will perform on-call duties as needed, with the expectation of arriving within 1 hour when called. During low census periods, you may have up to 12 hours of minimal patient care activity bi-weekly.
\n\n Key Responsibilities : \n \n
Patient Assessment and Care Planning : Conduct comprehensive physical, emotional, and psychological assessments upon admission and throughout hospitalization. Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team, adjusting as patient conditions evolve.\nMedication and Treatment Administration : Accurately administer prescribed medications via oral, IV, or injectable routes. Monitor patient responses, identify adverse reactions, and communicate any concerns to the healthcare team. Perform wound care, dressing changes, and manage drains / tubes as needed.\nPatient Monitoring and Documentation : Regularly monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation, and temperature. Document all assessments, interventions, and outcomes accurately in accordance with hospital policies. Recognize and promptly report any clinical changes or complications.\nCollaboration with Healthcare Team : Participate in daily rounds, communicate effectively with physicians, specialists, physical therapists, social workers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care. Provide regular updates on patient progress and coordinate treatment plans.\nPatient Education : Educate patients and families on disease processes, surgical procedures, medication management, and discharge instructions. Offer emotional support and counseling to address concerns and reduce anxiety.\nPostoperative Care Management : Monitor postoperative patients for signs of complications such as infection, bleeding, or respiratory issues. Manage pain and facilitate early mobilization, ensuring patients are well-informed about recovery steps and follow-up care.\nPatient Safety and Infection Control : Adhere strictly to infection prevention protocols, fall prevention measures, and safety standards. Maintain a sterile environment and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) consistently.\nEmergency Response : Recognize urgent clinical situations, provide immediate interventions such as CPR, and coordinate with emergency response teams to stabilize patients.\n\n\n Qualifications : \n \n
Education : \n \nValid State of Practice Nursing License (RN License) — Required \n\n\n
Experience : \n \nMinimum of 1 year of recent experience in a medical-surgical setting — Required \nExperience with a variety of medical conditions and surgical procedures is preferred. Oncology patient care experience is a plus but not mandatory.\n\n\nSkills and Abilities : \n \nStrong clinical skills in patient assessment, medication administration, and wound care\nExcellent communication and interpersonal skills for patient, family, and team interactions\nAbility to prioritize multiple patients in a fast-paced environment with critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities\nCompassionate, patient-centered approach to nursing care\nAbility to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations\n\n\n\n\n Preferred Education & Experience : \n \nBachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is desirable.\n
Prior experience in hospital settings with adult medical-surgical and low-volume oncology units.\nCertification in Basic Life Support (BLS) — Required \nCertification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) — Preferred\n? All licenses and certifications must be current and valid in the state of practice. \n
