The Production Supervisor is a hands-on leader who spends the majority of time on the production floor, directly overseeing both the Production and Labeling departments during their assigned shift. This role ensures throughput, yield, and efficiency targets are met while maintaining compliance with food safety, quality, and regulatory standards. The supervisor manages a union workforce, supporting productivity, safety, and positive labor relations in alignment with company policies and the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Duties and Responsibilities :
- Maintain a visible presence on the production floor to monitor operations, support employees, and resolve issues in real time.
- Train employees on safe work practices, policies, procedures, guidelines, and rules.
- Conduct weekly safety meetings.
- Ensure safe work practices, proper equipment operation, and adherence to safety, quality, and efficiency standards.
- Drive shift performance to meet or exceed throughput, yield, and efficiency targets.
- Monitor production metrics, identify causes of downtime / waste, and take corrective action.
- Accurately input daily production data.
- Partner with Maintenance, QA, Warehouse, and Sanitation to improve run rates and remove bottlenecks.
- Promote continuous improvement in labor, materials, and equipment utilization.
- Supervise production and labeling activities, including verifying labeling accuracy and compliance.
- Oversee changeovers to minimize downtime and maintain product integrity.
- Manage unionized employees in accordance with the CBA, company policies, and workplace rules.
- Collaborate with HR and management on attendance, performance, and conduct issues.
- Maintain positive and respectful communication with everyone.
- Enforce HACCP, GMPs, allergen control, and company food safety policies.
- Partner with QA to resolve quality concerns quickly and effectively.
- Ensure work areas meet sanitation and organization standards.
- Serve as the primary contact for shift operations, providing accurate updates and smooth handoffs.
- Complete daily reports for production, labeling output, and efficiency metrics.
- Track labor hours, staffing, and attendance records.
- Conduct and assist in investigations of safety, quality, or workplace incidents.
- Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements :
Qualifications and Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.3+ years of supervisory experience in food manufacturing, preferably with both production and labeling / packaging.Knowledge of standard safe operating procedures in a manufacturing environment.Proven success achieving throughput, yield, and efficiency goals.Experience managing in a union environment.Strong knowledge of HACCP, GMPs, and food safety regulations.Proficient in computer use.Proficiency with Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)Familiarity with Redzone production management software preferred.Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.Ability to motivate teams and maintain positive labor relations.Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as needed.Fluent in Spanish is a plus.Physical Requirements :
Majority of work performed in a manufacturing plant with exposure to noise, varying temperatures, and chemicals.Prolonged periods of standing, walking, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe shoes.Must maintain mental alertness, focus, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
