Physician - Pain Managment

JOB SUMMARY

The pain management physician specializes in diagnosing and treating patients with acute, subacute, and chronic pain. They develop individualized, multidisciplinary treatment plans and often work with a team of other healthcare professionals, including physical therapists, psychologists, and specialists.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned :

  • Patient assessment : Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients to diagnose the source of their pain. This includes performing physical examinations, taking detailed medical histories, and reviewing diagnostic tests like X-rays or MRIs.
  • Treatment planning : Formulate and implement personalized treatment strategies to manage or relieve pain. Treatment plans may include medications, minimally invasive procedures, and referrals for other therapies.

Interventional procedures : Perform a range of procedures to alleviate pain, often guided by imaging techniques like fluoroscopy or ultrasound. Common procedures include :

  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Nerve blocks
  • Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
  • Spinal cord stimulator (SCS) implantation
  • Medication management : Prescribe and manage pain medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants, nerve pain medications, and, in some cases, opioids. They prioritize minimizing opioid use and adhering to regulations.
  • Coordinate multidisciplinary care : Collaborate with and refer patients to other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive treatment. This team may include physical therapists, chiropractors, occupational therapists, mental health professionals, and surgeons.
  • Patient education : Educate patients and their families on their condition, pain management techniques, medication safety, and lifestyle changes to improve their quality of life.
  • Record keeping : Maintain accurate and detailed electronic medical records of patient assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress.

    • JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

    Education

  • Graduate of an accredited United States or Canadian medical school; Doctor of Medicine, MD or Doctor of Osteopathic, DO.
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited American or Canadian residency program in anesthesiology or physical medicine and rehabilitation.
  • Completion of a specialized one (1) year clinical fellowship in pain management, must be ACGME accredited.

    • Training and Experience

  • Communication : Exceptional interpersonal skills and empathy to build trust and effectively communicate complex information to patients and the care team.
  • Attention to detail : Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for precise procedures and accurate medical documentation.
  • Problem-solving : The ability to evaluate and manage complex pain problems, often involving diagnostic tests, clinical judgment, and strategic decision-making.
  • Teamwork : A highly collaborative attitude to work effectively within a multidisciplinary

    • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Current professional medical licensure in Washington State required.
  • Active unrestricted DEA license required.
  • American or Canadian Board Eligible or Certification in Pain Medicine or related specialty, i.e. Anesthesiology
  • Active American Heart Association BLS required.
