OVERVIEW :
- ROLE : Power BI Engineer (Administration exposure a plus)
- ROLE TYPE : Direct Hire
- COMPENSATION : The end client has indicated a budget of approximately $120,000 for a base salary, depending on experience (potentially higher, but requiring sign-off from the executive team).
- WORK LOCATION : This position is 100% remote, anywhere in Missouri. Occasional travel may be required for internal meetings, but travel costs will be covered for such meetings.
- WORK AUTHORIZATION : The client, by default, cannot sponsor visa candidates for this role; therefore, work authorizations must be held by U.S. citizens, Permanent Residents (Green Card holders), or Visas not based on employer sponsorship (such as visas sponsored by a spouse or relative).

CURRENT SITUATION :
The client's current data environment is primarily based on SQL Server and largely on-prem. Their existing data warehouse integrates data from multiple EHRs and internal systems into a centralized SQL Server environment; however, it is not cloud-native and only supports data up to the previous day, which limits real-time reporting capabilities. Much of the warehouse was built in a report-specific, ad hoc manner, leading to inconsistent structures, limited reuse, and inefficient joins. There is no established star schema, operational data store (ODS), or layered architecture to support scalability or best practices in business intelligence (BI).
This new hire will join an existing team focused on modernizing the company's reporting using Power BI. Here are some of the core tasks slated for the team in the next year or so :
Participate in the Audit and rationalization of 700+ legacy reportsParticipate in the build-out of baseline executive and operational dashboardsParticipate in the transition of ownership of reporting from a reactive, SQL-only team to one that leverages Power BI more.Administer the Power BI infrastructure for the organization (and install / configure new aspects)Introduce automation and standard templates to reduce manual report requests (currently over 200 / month)Work with the Data Engineering team to lay the foundation for scalable BI infrastructure and cloud migration (e.g., Snowflake, AWS)Specifically, for this role as part of this team, the responsibilities during that time would be :
Data Modeling / Transformation Star / snowflake schema design, relationships, hierarchies, calculated columns, Power Query (M language) for clean / transform, tune models (column reduction, aggregations).DAX Development – Measures, calculated tables, temporal functions (YTD, rolling averages, tune DAX, etc.Dashboard / Report Development – Build dashboards / reports / visualizations / KPIs / drill -through / mobile-compatibility.Data Sourcing – DirectQuery, import, composite models, SQL Server, Azure Synapse, data lakes, Excel, APIs, Power BI Service data refreshes, etc.Security / Deployment – RLS / OLS, deployment pipelines, publish via Power BI Service, governance, etc.KEY SKILLS :
Data Modeling – Enterprise-grade semantic models, star / snowflake schemas, composite models, tuning (VertiPaq Analyzer, etc.), aggregations, partitions, DirectQuery vs Import strategies.DAX / Power Query (M Language) – Author, tune, statistical calculations, time intelligence, data shaping, ETL, automation, reusable dataflows, etc.Data Sources – Azure Synapse, Data Lake, Databricks, SQL Server, APIs, Gateways, refresh scheduling, Power BI Embedded, Service Principals, PowerShell, REST APIs.Security / Compliance – Row-Level Security (RLS), Object-Level Security (OLS), capacity / tenant settings, deployment pipelines, auditing / monitoring.ETL Development – especially experience building and optimizing ETL pipelines (preferably using ADF, Databricks, data lakes, etc.)Databricks – required for data processing and reporting pipeline development; expected to support future modernizationNICE TO HAVE REQUIREMENTS :
Power BI Administration Platform, Security / Governance, Data Infrastructure, Automation, Monitoring, Programming Languages (DAX, Power Query (M), Python, C#, R), Scalability)Data Infrastructure Design / Administration – Gateways, periodic refreshes, version control.Architectural Data Modeling & Warehousing Concepts – especially familiarity with performance optimization, schema design, and data integration strategiesEHR Data Experience – familiarity with data from healthcare systems (e.g., NextGen, myAvatar) is a plus, but not requiredHealthcare Domain – Clinics, Hospitals, Behavioral HealthNOTABLE BENEFITS :
