Description of Job : This position is a Housekeeping Lieutenant, Correctional Support Trades Supervisor II at a Sterling Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring the efficient and effective housekeeping and sanitation of facility structures and grounds and supervising assigned staff and inmate crews. Position prepares inmates for community re-entry by promoting the Colorado Department of Corrections Mission, Vision and Values while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights : Minimum Qualifications : Five (5) years of employment experience in housekeeping / janitorial / custodial work. Experience must include floor cleaning (sweeping, mopping, buffing, burnishing, stripping and waxing); surface cleaning, deep cleaning, carpet cleaning and comprehensive knowledge of associated cleaning supplies, chemicals and equipment. OR Applicant may meet the five (5) year requirement with a combination of work experience as follows : A minimum of three (3) years of employment experience as described above may be combined with correctional experience for a total of at least five (5) years.

  • Correctional experience must be security related duties where primary responsibilities throughout a shift, include monitoring and controlling inmate movement throughout their daily schedules, discovering and preventing contraband and responding to emergencies; ensuring proper key / tool / chemical / equipment control, use, storage and accountability; advising inmates in matters concerning work, programs, appropriate behavior and decision making in order to prepare them for successful community re-entry.

Required Competencies : Proficiency in correctional housekeeping, floor cleaning (to include sweeping, mopping, buffing, burnishing, stripping and waxing), sanitation and chemical use, storage, and tracking. Ability to create a cohesive team while mentoring and motivating assigned staff. Strong Work Ethic, integrity and dependability. Sound judgment and decision making skills. Ability to delegate effectively. Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively cooperate with other staff members and inspire teamwork. Ensure timely, safe, secure, compliant and cost effective completion of housekeeping operations. Willingness and ability to effectively communicate while working with inmates individually and in groups, providing verbal and / or written instructions, monitoring progress and compliance, in a highly regulated environment with firm deadlines and mandatory reporting and record-keeping regulations. Resolve conflict and informal grievances at the lowest level possible. Knowledge of and willingness to apply effective correctional methods to prepare inmates for community reentry. Ability to quickly respond to emergencies (such as fights, medical emergencies, fires or escapes). Willingness and ability to use physical force to control a situation. Self-control, a strong sense of ability to work in stressful, potentially violent situations. Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and mentally resilient under pressure and observant throughout their shift. Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high-stakes interaction. Ability to read and comprehend the English language. Ability to effectively communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing. Ability to create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines with accessibility in mind.
