Tax Staff Accountant

Our firm works with clients in a number of industries and has a rapidly growing restaurant and hospitality division that serves clients nationwide.

We are looking for an  in-person only Tax Staff Accountant in the Topeka office . Full-time availability is needed, 2300 hours per year. After initial training of approximately 9 - 12 months, a hybrid-remote work schedule can be discussed.

If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have experience preparing personal, corporate, partnership, S-corp, fiduciary, and non-profit tax returns. You should be able to make decisions on all but the most unusual tax matters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :

Tax Preparation and Analysis : Tax staff accountants are responsible for analyzing tax information submitted by clients and advising them on any questions or concerns. They utilize their knowledge of tax regulations to answer client inquiries and assume overall responsibility for completing tax returns, exercising judgment when further expertise is needed. Their work includes preparing personal tax returns of varying complexity, as well as corporate, partnership, S-corp, fiduciary, and non-profit tax returns. They also prepare amended returns, tax projections for both individuals and businesses, and handle property tax refund forms, employee benefit plan returns, carryback returns for net operating losses, and many other specialized tax filings. Completing S-election forms and requests for accounting changes are also part of their duties. The role involves making adjusting entries and finalizing trial balances to prepare tax returns, as well as preparing tax accruals as needed for corporate filings.

Tax Research and Compliance : Professionals in this position are expected to understand the rules, regulations, and the Code of Professional Conduct of the AICPA. They respond to all types of tax notices and draft the necessary responses. Tax research projects are regularly performed, and a solid understanding of depreciation—along with proficiency in depreciation software—is vital for setting up clients and analyzing depreciation reports.

Confidentiality and Professional Conduct : Because tax staff accountants deal with confidential client matters, the ability to maintain discretion is essential. They must understand, follow, and comply with the company’s established policies, procedures, and work rules.

Time Management and Deadlines : Meeting deadlines is a crucial part of the role, as accountants must work the hours necessary to complete assignments on time.

Requirements

Required Qualifications :

• In-office work through two tax seasons (fall and spring) , due to the interaction necessary with trainer; amount of time required will vary based on the individual's experience and abilities.
• Individuals at this level normally have at least a bachelor's degree with major in Accounting, or other related business field; or equivalent accounting experience.
• Zero to two years' experience in tax preparation.
• Strong technical knowledge and skills.
• Proficiency in use of accounting and tax software.
