The Fire Department is a combined system of county and volunteer companies. Inside this system, Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue (AVFRD) exists as one of the volunteer companies. This department is celebrating 81 years of being in service to the community. The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department is dedicated to safeguarding the lives and property of Ashburn and Loudoun County's residents and visitors through superior fire, rescue, emergency, and medical response services.

AVFRD operates a specialized fire apparatus repair shop. The shop caters to the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, providing reliable maintenance, repair, and upgrade services for fire trucks and related apparatus. There are 25 pieces of apparatus that the facility is responsible for. Operational focus is on safety, compliance, and operational efficiency for all apparatus assets contained within the AVFRD fleet. The operation supports the apparatus for station 6 and station 22.

We're on the lookout for a dedicated Fleet Mechanic to join our dynamic team. This role is critical in maintaining and repairing our volunteer company-owned emergency apparatus, emphasizing the importance of experience with gas and diesel engines (e.g., Cummins), heavy truck mechanics, vehicle electrical systems, troubleshooting, and diagnosis. Role Overview

The Fleet Mechanic is instrumental in the maintenance and repair of a diverse range of vehicles and equipment, ensuring operational readiness and safety. Our fleet includes :

  • Fire Suppression engines
  • Ambulances
  • Aerial ladder trucks
  • Light Duty Utility Vehicles (pickup & SUVs)
  • UTV(s)
  • Various other vital mechanical support equipment

The role demands not just technical expertise in diagnosing and fixing mechanical and electrical issues but also creativity in parts fabrication and a proactive stance on fleet management. You will work from a company-owned, on-site, 3-bay maintenance shop. Candidates are expected to have personal tools, possess or be capable of obtaining ASE or specific Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) Certification(s), a Virginia State Inspector's License, and Emergency Vehicle Operations Certifications I-IV. Comprehensive background checks are a prerequisite for all prospective hires.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT Inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles, specializing in firefighting and rescue equipment.
  • Perform adjustment and repairs on various types of truck equipment including, but not limited to the following : Electrical / Brake / Cooling Systems, Starters / Alternators, Fan clutches, Engine electronics, Diesel steering systems, Engines (gas and diesel), Transmissions (manual and automatic), Clutches, Differentials, etc.
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair various types of truck equipment including, but not limited to the following : Electrical / Brake / Cooling Systems, Starters / Alternators, Air conditioning systems, Fan clutches, Engine electronics, steering systems, Engines (gas and diesel), Transmissions (manual and automatic), Clutches, Differentials, etc.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Road test vehicles to diagnose malfunctions and ensure that they are working correctly.
  • Identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, using sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives.
  • Work with and listen effectively to clients and customers to assess their needs, providing information or assistance, resolving their problems, or satisfying their expectations.
  • Manage concurrent assigned tasks, making effective judgments as to prioritizing work-related activities and time allocations.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, as well as Diesel tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Document according to company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and all findings observed on Repair Orders.
  • Work with a high degree of independence and manage own daily schedule.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and be able to work within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
  • Obtain parts from approved local and national vendors as necessary for the repairs to be performed.
  • Communicate with management and support team via email or phone to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and / or discuss RO findings notes.
  • Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health, and environmental policies, and federal regulations, to include OSHA, EPA, and DOT.
  • Participation in the fleet apparatus committee offers crucial insights into the maintenance and specification of EMS and Fire equipment.
  • The ability to participate in emergency on-call situations as needed
  • Any assigned tasks and duties in the scope of fleet maintenance

    • Skills and Competencies

  • An extensive understanding of automotive / truck repair and maintenance, with specialized knowledge of diagnostic tools and equipment unique to fire apparatus vehicle repair.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and integrate within a volunteer-based team, promoting a collaborative and productive environment.
  • Strong analytical skills to identify issues and implement timely, practical solutions, minimizing vehicle downtime and ensuring operational efficiency.
  • Commitment to rigorous safety standards, with the flexibility to adapt to dynamic work conditions
  • Possess physical capabilities to manage demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces, in various environmental conditions.
  • Ability to travel and attend required training to stay on top of current and future certifications
  • Knowledge of the NFPA standards for the apparatus, sections 1002, 1071, 1901, 1911, and others.

    • Qualifications & Experience

  • A high school diploma or GED, accompanied by 2-3 years' experience in automotive, light, or heavy equipment repair, forms the educational foundation for this role.
  • A valid driver's license with a clean record is mandatory. Preference will be given to candidates with Master and EVT certifications, EVOC I-IV within 90 days, and those holding or capable of obtaining a Commercial Driver's License.
  • The ability to navigate and utilize computer systems (MS Office Suite, Adobe, Fleet Management Software) effectively is essential, alongside proficient English literacy.
  • Deep desire to learn, advance, and perform in an environment to build skills for future growth, personally and professionally

  • Level II Fleet Mechanic : Intermediate level, with ASE T-2, T-3, T-6, EVT F-3, F-4 certifications, advancing to diesel engines, drive trains, and electrical systems expertise.
  • Level III Fleet Mechanic : Advanced level, demanding a comprehensive skill set evidenced by ASE T-1, T-7, EVT F-5, F-6 certifications, covering gasoline engines, heating / air conditioning, aerial apparatus, and automatic transmissions.
