General Summary of Position

MedStar Health is looking for an AMHC Peer Recovery Coach t o join our team at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center!

The AMHC Peer Recovery Coach (PRC) provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems. The Peer Recovery Coach will work as part of the Emergency Department team to provide peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues. The Peer Recovery Coach will assist in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services. Services will be provided in the Emergency Department with appropriate follow-up .

Prima r y Duties :

Services include peer assessment, intervention and support to patients and their families. Conducts brief interventions to patients that screen positive for alcohol and / or drug use. Identifies patients history of drug / alcohol use, treatment history, motivation to change behavior and other needs for community support services.

Identifies patients readiness to change and use motivational interviewing techniques and other communication skills to support a plan for reducing or eliminating harmful drug and / or alcohol use. Assist patients and family with understanding how to utilize these community services. Assists patients in linking to community support services and substance treatment services including securing appointments and transportation.

Acts as peer support throughout the hospitalization and post-discharge, as appropriate to attain goals. Provides family members with recovery support materials. Provides telephone outreach to patients to assist with linkages and continued peer support. Models coping techniques and self- help strategies.

Maintains current knowledge and gains new knowledge. Participates in training to con tinually gain new skills. Attends required staff and other meetings. Completes required documentation and other reports.

Works effectively within and between departments. Works with ED staff and social workers to identify community support services. Acts as a resource to other clinical team members on recovery support. Consults with nursing staff, social work as requested , even if patient does not screen positive. Notifies patients nurse before visiting the patient. Telephones treatment providers to verify patient showed up for appointment; and follow up by telephone with any patient that misses an appointment.

Qualifications :

High School Diploma or GED.

1-2 years of professional experience working in a recovery program.

Actively engaged in his / her own recovery program for at least three years showed personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and / or drug use with no relapses.

Cert ified Peer Recovery Specialist or Certified Peer Recovery Coach.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 - $33.08
