Overview
The New York Public Library has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for over 125 years. Founded in 1895, NYPL is the nation's largest neighborhood public library system and the most used research library in the world. NYPL provides a fundamental resource to millions of readers, learners and scholars - we are seeking a Product Manager to support these ongoing efforts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in product management, as well as an interest in cybersecurity among other technology areas, to help drive the implementation of innovative solutions that help to serve the patrons of the Library.
We are looking for someone we can count on to :
Own :
- The development and execution of the cybersecurity product roadmap, working in partnership with various teams within the NYPL
Specific projects, including managing work timelines, milestones, and deliverables to ensure initiatives stay on track and within budget.
Teach :
Technical security and other related concepts to non-technical stakeholders and advocate for initiatives to build support among leadership, staff, and partners.Learn :
The functional structure and core mission of the New York Public Library.Core cybersecurity challenges and needs at NYPL and gain a working knowledge of relevant tools.
Improve :
The library's patron services, networks, and digital offerings, by evaluating and implementing new tools and technologiesProcesses and procedures through clear documentation and by collaborating with IT compliance to ensure safety and security are maintained as products are developed and managed.
Some expectations for this role are that within :
1 month , this person will :
Understand the functional structure and core mission of NYPLUnderstand the organization and roles within the IT team and become embedded within the Product Management team and the CyberSecurity team
Engage with the full IT team, including service delivery, desktop services engineering, solutions development, network engineering, and DevOps, as well as with key partners, stakeholders and experts across the institution
Contribute to work management ceremonies, and be conversant in tools including JIRA, Confluence, Notion, ServiceNow and other relevant product / task management software packages
3 months , this person will :
Develop an understanding of core NYPL cybersecurity related challenges and needs, and partner with the cybersecurity team to identify opportunitiesDeepen contacts across the institution to elicit, negotiate, and agree upon priorities, so as to ensure focus on the most impactful areasSocialize learnings with IT leadership, in partnership with the cybersecurity team and other IT Operations teamsAuthor business requirement documentation as needed, and lead and facilitate agile ceremonies as product ownerActively contribute to the planning and development of the cybersecurity roadmapHave a working knowledge of any cybersecurity and other relevant tools deemed necessary by the product management leadership, the cybersecurity team, and IT operations management6 months and beyond , this person will :
Define a 1-year roadmap for the cybersecurity program or other product portfolio as determined by product management leadershipBe an effective advocate for stakeholders and patrons of the Library : demonstrate broad empathy for their needs, problems, and pain points, and be able to understand, articulate and recommend trade-offs while balancing security requirementsAnalyze metrics and data to identify opportunities and successesCreate and present updates to senior IT leadership and stakeholdersResponsibilities
Develop and execute product roadmap, in partnership with our cybersecurity team and other infrastructure teams, ensuring compliance with best practices, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies.Collaborate with IT teams, digital services, legal, and leadership to ensure security or other relevant IT core values are embedded across all library technologies, applications, and services.Develop and manage work timelines, milestones, and deliverables, ensuring initiatives stay on track and within budget.Ensure clear documentation of processes, procedures, and project roadmaps to facilitate transparency and knowledge sharing.Evaluate and implement tools and technologies to enhance the Library’s patron services, networks, cloud services, digital offerings, and more.Support incident response efforts by taking part in the coordination of investigations, remediation strategies, and communication with stakeholders.Provide training and guidance to staff on product best practices to foster a culture of excellence within the Library.Partner with IT compliance to create policies and procedures that ensure the Library maintains safety and security as products are developed and managed.Other projects and job duties as necessaryPerform other related duties as necessaryRequired Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree, with one year of experience - OR - 2-5 years of product management experienceRequired Experience
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical security concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams, including IT, digital services, and library leadership, to integrate security best practices into technology projects.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess challenges and develop practical solutions.Experience guiding teams through security and technology changes, ensuring smooth adoption and minimal disruption.Ability to advocate for initiatives and build support among leadership, staff, and external partners.Some knowledge of cybersecurity management, product security, or IT security in a complex organizationUnderstanding of cybersecurity principles, risk assessment methodologies, compliance frameworks (such as NIST, ISO 27001, or GDPR), and security technologies is a plus.More...
