Overview

Electrical Engineer

South San Francisco, CA | Ground Systems | Full Time

About Zipline Zipline is on a mission to transform the way goods move by building, manufacturing and operating the first instant delivery and logistics system that serves all humans equally, wherever they are. Zipline has powered Rwanda's blood delivery network and Ghana's COVID-19 vaccine distribution, enabled on-demand home delivery for Walmart, and supports healthcare providers bringing care directly to U.S. homes. Our technology focuses on a teleportation service that delivers what you need, when you need it, through robotics and autonomy platforms to decarbonize delivery and increase access to essential goods worldwide.

About the Role

The Ground Systems team develops the components to support aircraft landing, charging, loading and launching. We seek an Electrical Engineer with a strong foundation in EE design and experience in electronics development, processes and tools. You will develop hardware for our ground systems, designing electronics in fields such as microprocessors, high-speed communication, GNSS, brushless DC motor drive, power supply, battery charger, and more.

These components enable autonomous takeoff and landing for our fleet and seamless integration with shipper sites, expanding Zipline\'s impact from 100,000 deliveries / year to 100 million globally. You will collaborate with world-class engineers and be encouraged to learn and grow through mentorship.

The Ground Systems team designs robust systems for life-saving service in harsh environments. You will help with system architecture, performance, reliability, fault tolerance, safety (UL compliant), and ensure designs are robust against environmental, ESD, and EMI threats. You may build custom electro-mechanical solutions with high-performance embedded computing and high-speed communication.

What You\'ll Do

  • Own the electrical design for volume production through a full design cycle including requirements, prototype, schematic capture, layout, and validation.
  • Make impactful design decisions daily with a high level of independence.
  • Lead trade studies, understand competing design priorities, and provide direction to reduce risk.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with reliability, mechanical, embedded, and systems engineers in all stages of development :
  • Concept : System requirements and specifications
  • Design : Schematic capture, PCB layout, system integration
  • Validation : Function and reliability testing
  • Production : DFM, design drawings, manufacturing, EOL testing, certification
  • Deployment : Troubleshoot field issues, develop rapid mitigations, roll learnings into future design revisions
  • Travel occasionally to support supplier and manufacturer visits, product deployment, and field validation

What You\'ll Bring

  • Bachelor\'s in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 3 years of hardware design experience including electronics circuit design, schematic capture, PCB layout, packaging, integration, validation and transitioning a product to production
  • Past success developing electronics for critical systems in fields such as energy, transportation, or medical devices
  • Design experience with mixed-signal PCBs, high-speed digital PCBs, microprocessors, Ethernet, power electronics, and motor drive
  • Proficiency in schematic capture, PCB layout, and simulation tools (Altium, SPICE, etc.)
  • Strong lab skills and familiarity with test equipment (oscilloscope, DMM, power analyzer, LCR meter, function generator, spectrum analyzer, etc.)
  • Design experience with UL safety requirements and EMC requirements
  • Design experience with embedded programming in Linux is a plus
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills across engineering disciplines
  • Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • What Else You Need to Know
