DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

GILLIG Engineering is responsible for the development, customization, and configuration of GILLIG's clean technology heavy-duty transit buses. We develop reliable buses that connect communities, reduce congestion, and contribute to a greener environment. Our engineers design, analyze, test, launch, and solve problems across a wide range of technical areas.

Electrical Engineering focuses on designing, developing, and optimizing electrical systems and components, such as low and high voltage power distribution, CANbus network topology, infotainment / CAD / AVL and surveillance system integration to ensure safety, durability, and performance. They collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet regulatory standards, troubleshoot production issues, and deliver cost-effective, efficient designs for heavy-duty transit buses.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Electrical Engineer / Senior Electrical Engineer position is a hands-on role directly responsible for transit bus design. Duties include requirements analysis, concept design, detailed design, problem resolution, vehicle attribute design, BOM development, customer application research, and other engineering duties involved in designing, configuring, and industrializing electrical systems for manufacturing heavy-duty transit buses. This role will influence systems and components to optimize vehicle functionality and performance.

This is a direct, full-time, on-site position with GILLIG in Livermore, CA reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager, with direction from senior engineers as needed.

TECHNICAL FOCUS

Power and Signal Distribution

You will apply your skills to provide customized, vehicle-based power and signal distribution systems through definition and / or selection of harnesses, devices, fusing, and connectors. Routing and environmental considerations are factors in a heavy-duty industrial and automotive product. Staying current with vehicle electrical power management technology and regulations is necessary for innovation and compliance. Experience with low voltage (12 / 24VDC) and high voltage (600VDC, 240 / 480VAC) is required. Experience in electrical harness manufacturing and / or industrial control systems is a plus.

IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL

  • Create and maintain Bill of Materials (BOM), defining appropriate applications of parts and assemblies
  • Gather information on supplier components, existing GILLIG designs, and technological advancements to optimize design concepts
  • Collaborate with the team to develop actions based on guidelines and modify processes as required
  • Use analytical tools to assess designs of self and others, including power, grounding, circuit protection, harmonics, mechanical performance, and durability
  • Use ECAD tools to create, review & release vehicle electrical components, schematics and harness assemblies with guidance from senior engineers as needed
  • Participate in the release process to move designs into production
  • Provide support in follow-on processes such as Change Control, Production Change Order (PCO), and Engineered Production Change (EPC) releases
  • Support designs throughout lifecycle including development, production launch, variants, customization, and field support
  • Collaborate with test engineers to create DVP&R, execute tests, and review results
  • Provide input for technical publications such as service, parts, and driver manuals
  • Collaborate with mechanical, controls and manufacturing engineers
  • Troubleshoot vehicle electrical and network issues
  • Senior Level

  • Provide input on modular BOM structure to improve configuration efficiency
  • Perform design trade-offs and optimization for robust, manufacturable designs
  • Gain mastery of Customer & Design REI releases, BOM structuring, Change Control, PCO, and Engineered Production Change
  • Provide expert input with test engineers to create DVP&R and review results
  • Operate in a primary role, proposing solutions to more senior engineers or management

  • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering, Electrical Engineering preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in engineering
  • Automotive, commercial, and / or heavy-duty vehicle design familiarity; direct experience a plus
  • Familiarity with BOM management
  • Fluency in CAD software such as Zuken E3 or Capital
  • Experience with component suppliers, engineering service suppliers, testing suppliers, and product validation engineers
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Service (DFS), and cost-efficiency (Value Engineering)
  • Hands-on troubleshooting, prototyping, testing, and validation on site and remote
  • Working knowledge of tools like multimeters, power supplies, CANalyzer, oscilloscopes
  • Experience with electrical load analysis and management for low- and high-voltage systems
  • Experience with automotive communication protocols (J1939, CAN, LIN, Ethernet) and diagnostics for signal integrity
  • Wiring harness design and integration tools (AutoCAD Electrical, Zuken / E3, Capital) for manufacturable designs
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance (SAE, NFPA, ISO) and safety-critical requirements
  • Senior Level

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive engineering experience
  • Fluent with BOM, documentation control, and revision management; modular BOM a plus
  • Experience with wiring harness design and formboard drawing using CAD tools
  • Proficiency in DFM, DFS, and Value Engineering
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and testing experience with diagnostic tools
  • WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Prolonged periods of sitting / standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • Regularly sit, stand, walk; occasional kneeling or squatting
  • Must be able to meet physical requirements with / without accommodation
  • Limited travel may be required
  • Must navigate manufacturing environment; comfortable around heavy machinery
  • Must wear PPE (safety glasses, bump caps, hearing protection, etc.)
  • EXPECTED COMPENSATION

    $75,000 - $164,000 / annual salary + premium benefits

    Pay may vary by location, job classification, knowledge, skills, and experience. Total compensation may include additional elements. Details provided with offer.
