Position Summary :
Mount Mary University's Promise Program is a federally funded TRIO Student Support Services program that provides academic, career and financial support to 140 first-generation and limited-income college students each year. The program supports students to remain in good academic standing, persist in college, and graduate with a bachelor's degree.
Primary Responsibilities :
- Provide individual consultation, assessment, advising, intervention, advocacy, problem solving, and referral for students regarding their academic, career, personal, and financial circumstances at the University
- Assess students' academic, career, personal, and financial needs; interpret results of formal and informal needs assessments; design services in consultation with the student to meet student needs
- Assist students with improving financial and economic literacy, including budgeting skills; work with students on obtaining financial aid and scholarships and completing the FAFSA
- Create, facilitate, and promote academic and social skill workshops
- Assist with the promotion of the Promise Program by attending larger campus events, including New Student Registration days, and work closely with the Director to ensure new students are recruited to the Promise Program each Fall semester
- Coordinate the New Student Orientation sessions and first-year experience initiatives; provide structured group activities aimed at improving the academic performance and retention of first- and second-year students through the academic year
- Maintain student data and records in a manner that ensures confidentiality and continual audit-readiness in terms of organization, completeness, accuracy, and full and appropriate documentation; maintain participant information, including case notes and contact hours, in the database in a complete, timely, and accurate manner and within established deadlines
- Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other members of the Mount Mary community to promote student college success
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development offerings, and Mount Mary University community-building activities and events
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills and Experience :
Master's preferred; Bachelor's degree required, with preference given to candidates with degrees in education, psychology, sociology, social work, student affairs, or counselingAt least 1 year of advising college studentsAt least 1 year of serving first-year college studentsRelevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar programs that serve first-generation, limited-income, and / or disabled college studentsProfessional work experience in higher education related to advising and providing academic support in a college settingKnowledge about first-year transition issues and effective measures to enhance first-year student retentionFamiliarity with financial aid processes, literacy, and completing FAFSA or other forms.Demonstrated skills in empowering students in their attitudes and academic skillsStrong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups, facilitate group process, and foster collaborative decision makingAttention to detail and strong organizational skillsFamiliarity with the challenges first-generation, limited-income students encounter, especially as it relates to academic successUnderstanding of retention issues in higher educationQualifications :
