Overview
As a Senior Counsel, Employment at Compass, you work on exciting matters that require proactive legal guidance. You are part of a group of talented in-house lawyers and collaborate across the organization to influence all aspects of Compass's business. You will partner with employees across the company and contribute to a high-impact, value-driven Legal Team.
Please note – this is a 100% onsite position and will report into either our NYC, LA or San Francisco office.
Responsibilities
- Oversee a range of employment matters across the United States from inception to completion
- Partner with senior management, business stakeholders, and the People & Culture team to act as a trusted legal advisor, balancing business needs and risk mitigation. Provide advice on multi-jurisdictional employment laws and issues, including but not limited to M&A transactions and integrations, wage and hour compliance / FLSA, leaves of absence and accommodations, recruiting, hiring, compensation and benefits, performance management, discipline, and separations
- Manage, consult, negotiate, and draft employment, independent contractor, and consulting agreements and restrictive covenants
- Work on litigation and defense strategy, arbitrations, internal investigations, communications with federal and state agencies, and responses to correspondence from attorneys and others
- Analyze judicial and legislative developments and structure and implement strategies, trainings, and policies / procedures to mitigate legal risk
- Supervise outside counsel to decrease spend and achieve desired results
- Contribute to Employment-related projects as necessary

What We Look For
Strong academic credentials including a JD and membership in good standing in at least one state barMinimum 6+ years of experience, primarily in employment advisory and counseling, with an in-house legal department or top-tier law firm with experience advising publicly traded clientsExperience with local, state and federal employment laws; familiarity with California, New York State and New York City a plusExperience with the FLSA and wage and hour laws and complianceExperience in employment-related due diligence in M&A transactions and integrating employeesTeam player who collaborates cross-functionally with People & Culture, business stakeholders, management, and legal professionalsProven ability to independently manage projects in a fast-paced environment with shifting prioritiesStrong organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to distill complex legal issues and provide clear legal advice to senior leadersCompensation
The base salary range for this position is $183,500-$203,900 ; base pay may vary based on knowledge, skills, and experience. Bonuses and restricted stock units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of benefits. Base pay is location-based. Minimum wage for the position will always be met.
