Public Health Director

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services is seeking a strategic, results-oriented leader to serve as the Public Health Director. This senior leadership role is responsible for overseeing and directing all aspects of the Division's operations, programs, and services, working in close partnership with the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and the Governor's Office. The Public Health Director will lead with integrity, ensuring the delivery of critical public health services across the state while aligning with the agency's mission of "Helping People Live Better Lives." The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership, financial management, and strategic planning skills, with a demonstrated commitment to public health excellence.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Providing strategic direction and leadership for the Division of Public Health.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating public health policies, programs, and initiatives.
  • Overseeing the Division's budget, financial planning, and resource allocation.
  • Fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and accountability.
  • Directing the planning, development, and evaluation of public health programs.
  • Collaborating with program deputy directors and administrators.
  • Implementing and monitoring strategic and operational plans.
  • Serving as a primary liaison between DHHS and external stakeholders.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with public health boards.
  • Representing DHHS in public health discussions and community forums.
  • Ensuring Division compliance with public health regulations.
  • Leading the Division's emergency preparedness and response efforts.
  • Partnering with Human Resources to enhance recruitment and professional development.
  • Overseeing procurement, contractual services, and records management.
  • Conducting regular financial performance reviews.

Minimum qualifications include :

  • Master's degree in public health administration or related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of executive leadership experience in a public health or health services organization.
  • Proven experience leading public health initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in managing large budgets and leading cross-functional teams.
  • Experience in collaborating with state, local, and federal partners.
  • Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
