General Purpose of Job :
Assist Histotechnician, Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser with daily duties.
Essential Duties :
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Review and sign out slides for distribution to Pathologists.
- Assist Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser with frozen section performed in the Mobile Lab including driving the Mobile Lab to desired location.
- Assist Histology Department with the Mobile Laboratory daily, monthly, and annual maintenance.
- Assist Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser with printing cassettes.
- Assist Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser with loading cassettes for processing.
- Assist Histotechnician / Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser with disposition of chemical waste.
- Assist Histotechnician with instruments' maintenance including daily, weekly, monthly maintenance.
- Assist Histotechnician with daily QC.
- Print slide labels.
- Maintain and organize slide / block storage room.
- Maintain supplies / inventory and restock supplies.
- Maintain tissue storage room including disposition of tissues.
- Keep Histology Department clean and organized.
- File slides and blocks daily.
- Assist in training new Team Member.
- Follow instructions given by Histotechnician, Pathologists' Assistant / Grosser, Pathologists, Leaders.
- Follow established procedures and best practices to ensure patients' safety.
- Communicate effectively in accordance with the ICARE values, in-person, via the telephone, and via email.
- Any duties assigned by the section supervisor.
Job Requirements
General Requirements
N / AWork Experience
Experience in a clinical laboratory preferredEducation
High school diploma or GED.Completion of at least one year (two semesters) of college science courses OR one year of experience in a clinical laboratory.Recent completion of a course in Medical Terminology or completion within 60 days following employment.Specialized Knowledge and Skills
Ability to read, follow directions, & perform procedures associated with specimen collection, handling & processing.Ability to recognize problems & take corrective actions.Ability to communicate effectively & professionally both in person & via the telephone.Ability to work well under pressure & to handle crisis situations.Ability to function as part of a team dedicated to Patient care.Ability to use a keyboard as required to perform the essential duties of the job.Ability to follow instructions.UM Health - Sparrow is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action employer.
