Overview
Assistant Professor – Environmental, Risk, or Science Communication at the University of South Carolina, College of Information and Communications, School of Journalism and Mass Communications (SJMC). Nine-month, tenure-track position with an expected start date of August 16, 2026.
Responsibilities
- Conduct original research and teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Pursue external funding and supervise student research.
- Engage in service to the school, college, university, and profession.
Areas of Interest
Environmental, risk, or science communication; areas may include media coverage of science and environmental issues, communication under hazards or uncertainty, information integrity and trust in public science communication, and use of digital platforms and AI, data analytics, forecasting, or visualization to advance public understanding.We welcome interest in water quality, water resources, environmental change, weather-related hazards, or disaster preparedness with connections to broader university efforts.Qualifications
Required : Ph.D. in Environmental, Risk, or Science Communication, Mass Communication, Communication Studies, Communication, Journalism, or a related field by the start date of employment. ABDs will be considered with Ph.D. required at time of appointment.Emerging record of scholarly publications or creative activity in environmental, risk, or science communication.Preferred Qualifications
Evidence of or strong potential for excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels.Demonstrated potential for external research funding.Start Date and Application Details
