USDA-ARS Postdoctoral Fellowship in Maize Breeding and Genetics

A research opportunity is available with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Starkville, Mississippi. The selected candidate will work on maize breeding and genetics research under the guidance of a mentor.

  • Conducting phenotype trials related to maize breeding and genetics.
  • Marker-trait association analysis and RNA-Seq analysis to identify genetic variations associated with desirable traits.
  • Preparation of data for scientific technical reports and manuscripts.
  • Current scientific advancement by reading literature and attending supervisor-approved meetings, workshops, and conferences.

The qualified candidate should have received a doctoral degree in a relevant field. The anticipated stipend is approximately $72,000 annually with a health insurance supplement.

USDA-ARS Postdoctoral Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Fellowship

A postdoctoral research opportunity is available with the USDA ARS in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The participant will conduct research on functionalizing waste lipids and the high boiling fraction of fast pyrolysis oil from farm wastes.

  • Experience in organic synthesis, analytical chemistry, structure-property relationships, material characterization, and familiarity with asphalt binder characterization.
  • Knowledge of instruments including nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-Transform infrared, mass spectrometry, dynamic mechanical analyzer, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Working knowledge of statistical analysis, data handling, and data analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, ability to be self-motivated, and to perform both independently and in a team environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and excellent written and oral communication skills with a good publication record.
  • The qualified candidate should have received or be pursuing a doctoral degree in a relevant field. The anticipated stipend range is $5,000.00 - $6,789.50 monthly.

    USDA-ARS Fellowship in Data Management and Machine Learning

    A research opportunity is available with the USDA ARS in Albany, California. The selected candidate will work on developing tools to transform data query, access, display, and sharing, perform analyses, present results, and publish manuscripts.

  • Experience in computer science, bioinformatics, or computational biology.
  • Experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence.
  • Experience with genetics and genomic data.
  • Experience with large, diverse datasets and data mining approaches.
  • Proficiency in Linux and computational programming.
  • Strong computational and analytical skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a doctoral degree in a relevant field. The anticipated stipend is $90,000 annually.

    Ecological Monitoring Crew Lead

    The New Mexico Forest and Watershed Restoration Institute (NMFWRI) is seeking a Crew Lead to work on ecological monitoring and restoration activities on public and private lands throughout New Mexico.

  • Leadership of the monitoring field crew in data collection, including regular overnight travel.
  • Providing oversight and quality control, supervising and mentoring student workers and interns.
  • Equipment inventory and maintenance, assisting with data analysis and reporting.
  • Participating in the creation, revision, and publication of training and other materials, providing training to various audiences.
  • The qualified candidate should have a BS in Forestry, Natural Resources Management, or a related field, with at least 2 field seasons of experience and basic GIS competency.

    Monitoring Technician (Seasonal)

    NMFWRI is seeking a seasonal Monitoring Technician to work on crews carrying out ecological monitoring and restoration activities on public and private lands throughout New Mexico.

  • Participating in the monitoring field crew in data collection, including overnight travel and lots of driving.

  • Performing computer entry of field data, including using Microsoft Excel, Access, FFI, and other database software with attention to detail.
  • The qualified candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in a natural resource field, including coursework pertinent to the duties described, or equivalent experience, and familiarity with ecological monitoring protocols.
