Position Summary

The Director of Behavioral Services, in collaboration with the clinical, educational, and treatment teams, leads the behavior services teams including, but limited to, Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) staff, counseling staff, school psychologists, and positive support facilitators in designing, developing, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating both school-wide and individualized behavioral support and intervention plans. The Director of Behavioral Services is knowledgeable and familiar with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), best practices, and principles in behavior management and Special Education and provides expertise in the analysis of behavioral problems, their functions, effective treatments, and provides expert support to inform clinical decision and practice.

Duties And Responsibilities

Provide supervision of assigned staff in the areas including, but not limited to, recruitment, selection, leadership, coaching, training, performance management, promotion, discipline, and termination. Consult with clinical, school-based, and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) teams in the assessment, evaluation, implementation, and monitoring of processes by providing expertise in the development of behavioral support and intervention plans for students in Special Education to support a positive behavioral environment and ensure optimal learning conditions. Lead behavioral teams by developing behavioral practices that are proactive in decreasing crisis level behaviors to reduce the need for physical restraint and seclusion as methods of response to behaviors that students exhibit which may include danger to self or others. Review all instances of restraint and / or seclusion, lead debriefing sessions with staff within twenty-four (24) hours of any crisis response, and engage in ongoing analysis of crisis response events to develop practices to decrease the level of crisis behaviors to promote a healthy and safe environment for students and staff. Lead and train staff in completing functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and behavioral intervention plans (BIPs) for students by providing individual and group trainings in these areas to produce accurate, individualized, and quantitatively measured products. Lead and train classroom staff on effective methods of behaviorally based instruction including, but not limited to, high-quality ABA-based instruction, by developing and providing training, modeling high quality behaviorally based instruction, and engaging in frequent progress monitoring to ensure fidelity and a consistent and school-wide approach to behavior management. Actively participate in the creation of FBAs and BIPs taking into consideration special education designation, psychiatric diagnoses, and psychopharmacological factors (when indicated) by providing expertise in best practices and principles in FBAs and BIPs to support an environment where all student behavioral needs are met in a safe, effective, and efficient manner. Fill in for behavioral services team member absences to ensure a continuity of care for children we serve. Train, coach, and consult with direct reports on best practices and principles for working with classroom staff on the implementation, monitoring, and measurement of BIPs including data collection and reporting by providing expertise in these areas to ensure a clear and consistent approach to behavioral analysis in the assigned environment. Support the direct implementation of behavioral support / intervention plan for each student (as warranted) by working directly with students and staff to implement and assess behavior plans to ensure that student behavior interventions are appropriate and effective. Monitor and continually evaluate the effectiveness of functional behavior assessments and intervention plans by scheduling frequent review sessions with direct reports to ensure that data is reviewed and plans are modified as a result of analyzed behavior trends. Meet regularly with staff(s) to discuss issues impacting students' progress to ensure accountability for job performance, addressing performance concerns, and, if needed, developing performance improvement plans to ensure that services provided are in the best interest of and meet the needs of the students served. Develop and lead the implementation of a school-wide positive behavior support program by organizing and leading a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) committee to ensure the most effective approach to school-wide behavioral systems. Provide clinical direction related to behavioral interventions and strategies during IEP, family, and team meetings by actively participating in these meetings, analyzing, and reporting data, and discussing behavior trends to ensure that behavioral goals are being met. Provide expertise and resources to staff, families, community agencies, and other referral sources regarding the provision of ABA services and the dissemination of best practice as it relates to the science of ABA by meeting regularly with stakeholders to share and discuss information. Provide the full range of behavioral services within an interdisciplinary team approach to ensure quality programming for all students served. Develop and nurture relationships with students' families by engaging students and families during IEP meetings, parent-teacher meetings, Manifestation Determination Review (MDR) meetings and other planning meetings to support the treatment process in all environments including but not limited to the school, community, and home settings. Lead group training for all stakeholders on assorted topics including, but not limited to, functional behavior assessments, behavioral analysis, and crisis intervention to support skill development, application of best practices, and consistent application in these areas. Meet with families, students, and other community support systems when necessary to discuss services and expectations of the varied stakeholders involved in the students' plan of care to ensure accountability, clarity, and consistency of services. Participate on the school-based administrative team by attending regularly scheduled team meetings to discuss and modify policies, procedures, and concerns in service delivery to ensure the highest quality services to children. Provide ongoing supervision to BCBA, Board Certified Assistant Behavioral Analyst (BCaBA) candidates, and Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) to ensure that licensure / certification needs are met to ensure that all staff are appropriately credentialed. Perform other duties as assigned.
