Job Overview

The Mental Health Clinical Director will oversee the clinical operations of our mental health services, ensuring high-quality care and compliance with regulatory standards. This role encompasses supervising clinical staff, developing and implementing policies and procedures, managing human resources issues, and excellent familiarity with the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, excellent organizational skills, and a commitment to advancing mental health care while staying current with state mandates and insurance requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities :

Leadership and Patient Services Schedule Breakdown :

  • Maintain a patient caseload of approximately 8-10 patients weekly.
  • Clinical Leadership and Management : 30 hours per week.

Clinical Supervision :

  • Provide direct supervision and support to clinical staff, including therapists, team leaders, mentors, and clinical supervisors.
  • Train supervisors on expectations and supervisory tasks. Maintain supervision records / files for limited licensed clinicians and peer consultation groups.
  • Conduct regular performance and productivity evaluations and provide constructive feedback to ensure clinical staff development and adherence to clinical standards and expectations.
  • Facilitate ongoing organizational and policy and procedure training as needed to introduce and manage all clinical operations for the practice.
  • Evaluate, connect, and provide professional development opportunities for clinical staff. Encourage clinical staff to expand their practice specialties and areas of expertise.
  • Review all records requests to assure compliance with confidentiality regulations including but not limited to; FMLA, STD, LTD, VA benefits, and other legal documents, prior to release.
  • Facilitate and oversee Clinical Advisory Committee to address ongoing practice wide documentation improvement and implementation, improve clinical outcome measures, and enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Policy and Procedure Development :

  • Develop, review, and update clinical policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as best practices in mental health care.
  • Review, update and maintain clinical handbook and supervision handbook, contracts, and associated documentation on a regular basis.
  • Implement and monitor quality assurance measures to maintain high standards of care and operational efficiency.
  • Lead initiatives to integrate new evidence-based practices and therapeutic approaches into clinical programs.
  • Human Resource Management :

  • Collaborate with HR to address staffing needs, including recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of new clinical personnel.
  • Resolve employee relations issues and mediate conflicts to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Ensure adherence to organizational policies and procedures, including ethical and legal standards, in all clinical and administrative functions.
  • Assist in the administration of progressive disciplinary actions and conduct management in alignment with HR organizational policies.
  • Guide and assist clinicians who are separating from the practice or who are going on leave of absence to transition or manage clinical continuity of care for all patients in accordance with State standards, the employment agreement and internal policies and procedures.
  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR) Management :

  • Oversee the clinical side of the EMR system to make suggestions for upgrades to work flow and to ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient information, including periodic review of timely billing practices.
  • Ensure EMR compliance with state and federal regulations and facilitate staff training on EMR usage.
  • Stay updated on best practices and technological advancements related to EMR systems.
  • Serve as the EMR leader for the clinical side of the EMR program.
  • Regulatory Compliance :

  • Stay current with Federal and State mandates, insurance requirements, and changes in mental health regulations to guide organizational practices.
  • Ensure all clinical practices and procedures comply with state and federal regulations, licensing requirements, and accreditation standards.
  • Oversee and assist Compliance Officer in regular patient chart audits and implementation of chart improvement plans for clinical staff who are underperforming.
  • Program Development and Evaluation :

  • Oversee the development and implementation of new mental health programs and services based on community needs and organizational goals.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements or adjustments as necessary.
  • Prepare and present reports on program outcomes, clinical staff productivity, performance, and other relevant metrics to senior leadership.
  • Collaboration and Community Engagement :

  • Foster partnerships with community organizations, stakeholders, and healthcare providers to enhance service delivery and access to mental health care.
  • Represent the organization at community events, conferences, and professional gatherings to promote mental health awareness and collaboration.
  • Essential Skills :

  • Demonstrate competence in use of the electronic medical records system, other technology such as video services and internal communications such as Tiger Connect.
  • Work collaboratively with all clinical and administrative staff.
  • Remain knowledgeable of polices related to letter writing, release of records, and patient terminations / discharges.
  • Remain up to date on evidenced based practices, supervision guidelines, and treatment ethics.
  • Demonstrate efficacy in charting and documentation using medical necessity as a guide.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical judgement and remain in good standing with WIM and outside licensing bodies.
  • Ensure compliance with state licensing board requirements for providing supervision services to limited licensed therapists.
  • Demonstrate organizational skills, be detail orientated, and manage a group of therapists, multitask, determine individual and clinical organizational priorities on a daily basis, monthly and annual basis.
  • Be an active member of the Leadership Team.
  • Effectively lead individual supervision and professional development tasks on a regular and ongoing basis. Complete corresponding supervision forms in a timely manner.
  • Comply with all applicable operational and clinical PCS policies and procedures.
  • Complete time sheets as required on a semi-monthly basis.
  • Follow and comply with the Employee Manual guidelines.
  • Physical Requirements of the Job :

    Clinical director must be able to sit at a computer and be able to type. The job also entails the ability to attend various community functions and events on behalf of the organization.

    Qualifications, Education and Experience Requirements :

  • Master's level degree in clinical social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, licensed professional counselor or doctorate in clinical psychology.
  • Full Licensure in State of Michigan for : LMSW, LMFT, LPC, or PHD.
  • At least 5 years of experience in face-to-face treatment of patients.
  • 3 years of clinical department management and supervision experience.
