Job Description
In this role, you will lead our US-based Fiber Design & Planning Team, supporting a major client¿s data center migration program. You will play a key role in planning and modelling new and diverted fiber cables, while also providing hands-on design input as part of the team.

This position requires both leadership and technical delivery, with a balance of team management and active design work.
The Role
You will take a hands-on approach with the team, guiding, mentoring, and motivating engineers to deliver high-quality designs. Strong expertise in the planning and design of fiber OSP and ISP networks from initial survey and concept design through to detailed Low-Level Design is essential. Experience working on both data center environments and legacy telco central office networks is also required.
Key Responsibilities
1. Fiber Network Planning & Design
o Develop high-level and detailed fibre network designs (point-to-point), including core, backhaul, distribution and customer drop networks
o Plan and model duct / civils routes based on client-specific design rules and state & city ordinances
2. Technical Leadership & Support
o Act as subject matter expert for assigned client project(s), ensuring design decisions align with client expectations and operational goals.
o Provide technical guidance to junior designers and field staff as required.
3. Design Oversight & Quality Assurance
o Review and validate designs produced by junior engineers to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with client & local government standards.
o Perform quality control on network plans, route schematics, and GIS outputs.
4. Mapping & Documentation
o Produce and maintain accurate network maps, schematics, and design drawings using GIS and CAD tools.
o Generate and manage supporting documentation including Bills of Materials (BOM), Bills of Quantities (BOQ), and splice plans.
5. GIS and Data Management
o Provide GIS mapping support and data analysis for the planning and construction teams.
o Ensure spatial data integrity and alignment with project requirements.
6. Stakeholder Coordination
o Liaise with internal teams, client contacts, and field personnel to resolve design issues and incorporate field feedback.
o Attend design review meetings and provide input on project delivery risks and solutions.
7. Process Improvemen t
o Contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards, templates, and procedures.
o Identify opportunities for automation or efficiency improvements in planning workflows.
8. Reporting & Compliance
o Support the Project team with reporting, design progress tracking, and milestone delivery.
o Ensure all outputs are compliant with industry regulations, health and safety standards, and local ordinances. Experience Required
Diploma or Degree in Engineering, Electrical Services, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
3+ years experience in fiber planning and design, ideally within a telecoms environment.
Proven experience in a team lead or technical lead role.
Strong blend of technical expertise and people management skills.
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Skilled in AutoCAD, QGIS, and ArcGIS.
Experience working in both data center and central office (CO) environments.
Strong leadership qualities with the ability to set a positive example.
Demonstrated success in managing and motivating teams to achieve high performance.
Solid understanding of fiber and civils network topologies and associated equipment.
Knowledge of fiber deployment methods, associated risks, and optical budget considerations.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Sound decision-making ability and proven problem-solving skills
Advantageous
Qualification in project management or similar.
Experience working for a Tier 1 US telecoms provider.
