About Makina Café
Makina Café is a woman-owned Ethiopian-Eritrean hospitality company with a food truck, catering kitchen, and seasonal food stall on Governors Island. In Spring 2025 , Makina will open its first full-service restaurant in Sunnyside / Long Island City , marking the first Ethiopian-Eritrean restaurant in Queens .
Our mission is to celebrate the culinary heritage of East Africa while offering a modern dining experience that honors the traditions, flavors, and hospitality of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
Position Summary
Makina Café is seeking experienced and dedicated Line and Lead Prep Cooks to join our opening team. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a ground-up launch, contributing to a restaurant that blends authenticity with creativity in a professional, fast-paced kitchen environment.
Responsibilities
Execute daily prep tasks : washing, chopping, peeling, portioning vegetables, meats, and legumes.
Accurately measure and assemble ingredients following recipes and portion standards.
Prepare traditional items such as sauces, stews, and injera (training provided).
Cook and plate menu items with precision, consistency, and attention to presentation.
Set up, maintain, and restock kitchen stations during service.
Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures, including labeling and proper storage.
Receive, organize, and rotate inventory (FIFO).
Maintain a clean, organized workspace and assist with end-of-day cleaning.
Communicate effectively with kitchen leadership regarding inventory, quality, and service flow.
Qualifications
1–2 years of professional kitchen experience preferred.
Solid knife skills and understanding of basic cooking techniques.
Strong sense of teamwork, organization, and urgency.
Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Physical ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
Positive attitude, reliability, and willingness to learn.
NYC Food Handler’s Certificate preferred (or willingness to obtain one).
