Hanover Co-op Food Stores is a member-owned consumer cooperative located in Lebanon, NH. With three full-sized grocery stores, one community market, two full-service auto service centers, an off-site production kitchen, and off-site administrative offices, we are dedicated to providing accessible and affordable locally grown and produced food and products to our members and community. Store Manager – White River Junction, VT
Position Overview :
The Store Manager serves as a key strategic leader of the Co-op Food Store, responsible for shaping and executing the vision, culture, and operational success of the store. This role goes beyond daily operations to focus on developing and implementing strategies that elevate the customer experience, optimize financial performance, strengthen employee engagement, and advance the Co-op’s mission of social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and financial strength for both short and long term gains.
In partnership with Human Resources, Marketing, Merchandising, and the Assistant Store Manager, and through strategic workforce planning, financial forecasting, and talent development, the Store Manager ensures the store thrives in a competitive marketplace while fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performance culture.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
1. Customer & Community Leadership :
a. Define and implement strategies to enhance the customer experience, build loyalty, and expand the Co-op’s presence in the community
2. Financial & Operational Strategy :
a. Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and performance targets
b. Monitor financial and operational goals to ensure sustainable growth and profitability
c. Provide input on how to correct under-performing areas through analysis of financials
3. People & Culture Development :
a. Partner with HR to recruit, retain, and develop top talent
b. Mentor leaders, build career pathways, and ensure accountability through performance management systems
4. Merchandising & Market Growth :
a. Collaborate with Merchandising to shape product strategy, optimize inventory, and drive sales initiatives that align with customer needs and market trends
5. Risk, Safety & Compliance :
a. Ensure strict compliance with labor, health, safety, and regulatory standards
b. Proactively manage risks and implement practices that safeguard staff, members, and assets
6. Co-op Mission Stewardship :
a. Champion and model the Co-op’s triple bottom line approach and Open Book Management practices, ensuring transparency, inclusion, and shared accountability
b. Work with the Merchandising department to assist with the development of new sales strategies
Essential Leadership Functions :
1. Lead strategic initiatives to grow sales, profitability, and customer loyalty
2. Create and sustain an outstanding store environment that reflects Co-op standards
3. Partner with Operations and / or HR on workforce planning, recruitment, and succession strategies
4. Build high-performing teams through coaching, mentoring, and development
5. Conduct in-depth financial and operational analyses to identify opportunities and address underperformance
6. Partner with merchandising and inventory teams to maximize profitability and customer value
7. Implement safety, security, and risk management procedures and provide feedback on the processes
8. Foster strong, collaborative relationships with members and staff
9. Lead cultural initiatives that promote accountability, inclusivity, and alignment with Co-op values
10. Serve as a visible role model of leadership, integrity, and customer commitment
Required Skills / Experience and Attributes :
1. 5–7 years of progressive retail management experience, grocery preferred
2. Demonstrated success in leading teams, driving sales, and managing P&L responsibility
3. Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration or related field preferred
4. Proven ability to design and execute strategic plans, with measurable business outcomes
5. High level knowledge of operations management, budgeting, merchandising, inventory, and margin control
6. Exceptional leadership, communication, and change management skills
7. Commitment to employee engagement, workforce development, and collaborative leadership
Schedule :
Flexible schedule to include one weekend and one closing shift per week.
Pay Range :
$40.65 - $52.85 - $65.04
