Position Overview :
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) serves as a frontline medical and operational staff member responsible for direct guest interaction, health monitoring, emergency medical response, and operational support across all shelter areas. This position ensures guest safety, health, and wellbeing through constant presence, proactive medical assessment, trauma-informed engagement, and coordination with leadership, security, local emergency medical services, and healthcare providers. The EMT maintains a visible, supportive medical presence throughout the facility 24 / 7 while operating under the guidance of a licensed Kentucky medical professional.
Please note : At this time, this is a 5-month contract with no benefits. There may be an opportunity for contract extension after the 5-month period ends.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities :
Emergency Medical Services & Health Monitoring
Conduct medical triage and health assessments for shelter guests as neededMonitor and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and oxygen saturationAdminister first aid and basic life support in accordance with EMT scope of practicePerform CPR and use automated external defibrillators (AED) when necessaryRecognize and respond to medical emergencies including cardiac events, respiratory distress, allergic reactions, and traumaAssess and provide initial care for injuries, illnesses, and chronic condition management needsIdentify guests requiring higher-level medical care and coordinate appropriate transport or referralsMaintain medical supply inventory and ensure readiness of emergency medical equipmentDocument all medical assessments, interventions, and treatments providedOperate under the direct guidance and protocols of a licensed Kentucky medical professional
Coordination with Medical Services
Serve as liaison with local EMS, fire departments, and emergency servicesCoordinate emergency medical responses and facilitate ambulance transport when neededCommunicate guest medical information to responding emergency personnelCoordinate with community health partners, clinics, and hospitals for guest medical needsFacilitate medication management support in coordination with licensed medical staffTrack and report communicable disease concerns to public health authorities as requiredMaintain communication with case managers regarding guests' medical needs and appointments
Guest Communication & Support
Provide direct, respectful communication with guests regarding health concerns, medical schedules, and wellness resourcesAnswer guest questions and provide information about available medical services and health resourcesServe as a positive, approachable presence to build trust and rapport with shelter residentsDeliver trauma-informed care and maintain dignity and respect in all guest interactionsEducate guests on basic health and hygiene practices to promote wellness
Safety Monitoring & Crisis Response
Maintain constant visibility throughout assigned areas to monitor guest safety, health status, and facility securityConduct regular walk-throughs of dormitories, common areas, restrooms, and outdoor spaces with attention to medical and safety concernsRecognize early warning signs of medical distress, mental health crises, conflict, or unsafe situationsApply de-escalation techniques to address conflicts and prevent escalationImmediately alert security personnel, supervisors, medical directors, or emergency services when situations require interventionRespond rapidly to medical emergencies throughout the facilityDocument and report all medical incidents, safety concerns, or unusual activities to supervisors and medical leadershipMonitor restroom facilities to ensure appropriate usage and prevent misuse
Facility Operations & Coordination
Coordinate pod movement to recreation areas, dining areas, and programming spaces according to established schedulesEnsure orderly transitions between activities while maintaining appropriate guest flow and safetyMonitor facility for damage, maintenance needs, or safety hazards and report immediately to supervisorsAssist with facility setup and breakdown for meals, programming, and special eventsSupport cleaning and sanitation efforts to maintain a clean, safe, healthy environmentMonitor environmental conditions that may impact guest health and safety
Supply Management & Distribution
Conduct regular counts of medical supplies, hygiene kits, linens, towels, and other essential suppliesMaintain and organize medical equipment including blood pressure cuffs, pulse oximeters, AEDs, oxygen equipment, and first aid suppliesMonitor inventory levels of both medical and general supplies and alert appropriate staff when restocking is neededEnsure proper storage, handling, and sterility of medical equipment and suppliesDistribute hygiene kits, linens, clothing, and other supplies to guests as neededAssist with receiving, organizing, and storing supply deliveriesMaintain organized supply areas and ensure items are accessible for distribution
Food Service Support
Assist with food distribution during meal service timesMonitor guests during meals for potential choking hazards or dietary concernsHelp maintain orderly meal service flow and ensure all guests have access to mealsMonitor dining areas during meal times to address any medical issues or concernsCommunicate dietary restrictions and medical nutrition needs to food service vendorsSupport food service vendor coordination by communicating guest counts and dietary needsClean and reset dining areas after meal service
Coordination & Communication
Coordinate with Shelter Operations Supervisors and other staff to ensure smooth operationsCommunicate with third-party service providers, case managers, healthcare providers, and community partnersRelay important medical and operational information between shifts during staff briefingsMaintain radio or phone communication with other staff members throughout shiftsParticipate in daily medical briefings and safety huddles
Physical Support Tasks
Move medical equipment, supplies, and other items as needed to support shelter operationsSet up and break down tables, chairs, and other furniture for activities and mealsAssist with light cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, and trash removal in accordance with infection control protocolsPerform other physical tasks as assigned to maintain facility operations
Required Knowledge & Skills
Current Kentucky EMT certification or national EMT certification with Kentucky reciprocity eligibilityProficiency in vital signs assessment, patient assessment, and emergency medical proceduresStrong clinical judgment and ability to recognize medical emergenciesKnowledge of infection control protocols and universal precautionsStrong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to interact respectfully with diverse populationsCrisis intervention and de-escalation skillsUnderstanding of trauma-informed care principlesAbility to remain calm and professional in high-stress and emergency situationsCompetency with medical documentation and electronic health records (preferred)Physical ability to stand, walk, and be on feet for extended periodsAbility to lift and move supplies, equipment, and assist patients up to 50 poundsStrong observational skills and attention to medical and safety detailsAbility to follow medical protocols and work collaboratively as part of a healthcare teamCultural competency and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and experiencesKnowledge of HIPAA and patient privacy requirements
Required Education & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent requiredCurrent EMT-Basic certification or higher (EMT-Advanced, Paramedic) from a Kentucky-approved program or eligible for Kentucky reciprocityCurrent CPR / BLS for Healthcare Providers certification requiredCurrent First Aid certification requiredPrevious experience working in emergency medical services, hospital settings, or emergency shelters preferredExperience working with homeless populations, individuals in crisis, or vulnerable populations preferredCrisis intervention or de-escalation training preferredMust be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident for at least the past five (5) years to comply with federal regulationsMust be available to work flexible schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating basisMust be willing to work under the supervision and protocols of a licensed Kentucky medical professional
