Shift Supervisor
This position assists in managing the operations of Simpson's Emergency Shelter located within Simpson Community Shelter and Apartments. The shelter program serves 72 single adults each night. This role combines staff supervision with direct service, ensuring that guests' basic needs are met while fostering a hospitable, clean, and supportive environment for both guests and staff. Staff at the shelter, including the Shift Supervisor, also provide advocacy, support, and resource referrals to program participants as needed.
This is a full-time position that is primarily composed of evening and weekend hours, although additional daytime availability may be required for meetings and training. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for supervising evening and weekend staff and contributing to program development. Receives work direction from the Shelter Program Manager on regulations, HR issues, and program management.
Hours for this position are generally : Mondays through Thursdays from 2 pm until midnight.
Responsibilities
Major Responsibilities / Activities :
- Provide leadership for positive on-site operations of the shelter including coverage of the front desk and dining room; know, communicate and uphold shelter rules.
- Read shelter notes daily; update and follow up with staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that the shelter has adequate supplies for operation.
- Coordinate building and equipment maintenance needs in collaboration with the Business Operations team and Shelter Program Manager.
- Support guests with crises, conflict management, and disciplinary concerns.
- Manage emergency situations and assure safety and security of participants and staff.
- Provide stability and support to staff and volunteers during evening and weekend shifts.
- Facilitate open communication among staff on all issues in coordination with the Shelter Program Manager.
- Ensure adequate staffing on evening and weekend shifts, providing coverage as needed during times of staff absences and unfilled shifts.
- Accurately complete data entry and reports utilizing client databases.
- Ensure accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality of all participant records.
Provide essential program staffing through recruiting, supervising, training, evaluating, and initiating termination of staff :
Collaborate in the hiring and on-boarding process of new hires in coordination with the Shelter Program Manager.Meet regularly with direct reports, approve timecards, and complete performance evaluations in a timely manner.Provide staff training, team building, and development of individual staff goals.Provide positive representation of SHS through public relations and networking :
Assist the kitchen team in greeting and supporting shelter and kitchen volunteers.Communicate the agency's mission and its programs effectively to constituents.Participate in professional meetings, workshops, and trainings as required.Demonstrate essential knowledge, abilities, and skills :

Bachelor's degree in social work, Human Services or Community Development; or equivalent knowledge, skills, and experience.4 years' experience working with diverse populations, individuals experiencing mental and / or chemical health issues, and people experiencing homelessness and poverty.Experience in management and program development preferred.Skilled in the following : organizational abilities, relationship building, excellent communication, and navigation of the Twin Cities' social service system.Driver's license and vehicle are required in order to transport program participants as needed.Essential Physical Functions :
Must be able to hear, speak, read and write in English to communicate with staff, participants, and volunteers in person, on the telephone, and in writing.Must be able to move about the shelter location.Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs on an occasional basis.
