Purpose

As a recognized automation expert within our division / business unit, you will lead teams and drive financial impact by defining, deploying, starting up and supporting process platform equipment. You will be the technical system owner for automation packages supporting Biologics operations, including rFVIII Operations, mAb Operations and Cell Therapy on a global scale. This position is part of the global Process Engineering & Technology (PE&T) group located in Berkeley, CA and in Germany (Wuppertal, Leverkusen & Wuppertal). Your role involves mentoring, directing project or discipline teams, and supporting the delivery of bioprocess equipment to Bayer’s global network. You will translate user requirements into technical solutions, continuously improve processes, and achieve business and technical goals.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Define, deploy, start‑up, and support process platform equipment.
  • Lead cross‑functional teams to deliver solutions requiring expertise from other business areas.
  • Partner with Biologics to support rFVIII Operations, mAb Operations, and Cell Therapy on a global level.
  • Lead projects of larger scope and provide guidance to peers.
  • Direct project or discipline teams and mentor others within and outside the department.
  • Serve as the technical system owner for automation packages and user interface to translate user requirements into technical solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with internal and external technical regulatory requirements and good engineering practices.
  • Present and communicate project‑related tasks to peers and management for overall coordination.
  • Make decisions that influence the goals of the business unit and produce results that contribute to business or technical goals.
  • Primary location : Berkeley, CA. Relocation assistance may be offered. Remote / hybrid working arrangement will not be accommodated.

Required Qualifications

Must have one of the following :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline or similar field with 10 years of relevant experience in industrial bioprocess production (biopharmaceutical preferred).
  • Master’s Degree with 4‑8 years of relevant experience in industrial bioprocess production (biopharmaceutical preferred).
  • Superior knowledge and extensive experience with cGMP.
  • Extensive experience in Automation industry with experience in Design, Construction, and Commissioning.
  • Relevant experience with capital projects.
  • Deep knowledge of standard industrial automation technologies, DCSs, PLCs, SCADAs, and HMI programming.
  • Strong knowledge of control system philosophy, control system standards, instrumentation configuration, programming, and design.
  • Strong working experience with ISA 88 and ISA 95 levels.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial networks including Ethernet networks, Profibus, and OPC communication.
  • Expertise in DeltaV DCS (or similar).
  • Superior ability to analyze and troubleshoot process operations.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment as a leader / facilitator and team member.
  • Result‑driven and able to deal with ambiguity.
  • Willingness to execute projects at remote locations with different geographic settings.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant industry experience in a cGMP Biopharmaceutical industry setting.
  • Relevant experience with Cell and Gene Therapy.
  • Compensation & Benefits

    This posting will be available for application until at least 11 / 4 / 2025. Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $136,929.60 and $205,394.40. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission if relevant. Other benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, and more.
