Lead Protection & Controls Engineer at PROENERGY

Position starts remotely and will move to in-office when the Leawood, KS office opens in Q2 2025 to build our in-person culture.
Position Responsibilities
- Client facing and will manage the scope, budget, and schedule for the electrical discipline on assigned projects, including change management.
- Provide third-party engineering oversight and engineering management for the Substation team as we build our internal capabilities.
- Execute the electrical technical design on projects and serve as the engineer of record as needed.
- Perform or review routine and complex engineering tasks within the electrical discipline using current technology, standards, calculations, templates, and cataloged products.
- Prepare or review load lists, power system studies, substation layouts, single lines, equipment layouts, area classifications, sizing calculations, schematics, equipment specifications, data sheets, requisitions, and technical bid analysis.
- Collaborate with the integrated EPC team and clients to handle RFIs, deliverable reviews, change orders, and equipment buyouts.
- Review vendor documents to ensure specifications and data sheet requirements are met.
- Foster high-performing teams and guide project execution; mentor and develop team members with technical guidance across projects and disciplines.
- Identify opportunities to improve customer satisfaction, quality of work, and operating efficiencies.
- Help develop and implement guidelines and procedures to standardize engineering deliverables (PowerFLX work).
- Stay current with technology and industry practices and apply practical solutions.
- Lead quality checks of design and engineering to ensure accuracy and establish technical credibility and leadership within the team.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program.Six (6) years of experience in related work involving substations, switchyards, fossil fuels, power, or generation.Strong written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously under aggressive schedules.Ability to apply knowledge, ensure quality program compliance, and promote continuous improvement and change management.Experience creating grounding, area classification, power, single line, schematic, and motor control drawings with understanding of protective devices and coordination techniques.Knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, API, NEC, NESC and other industry codes, specifications, and standards.Ability to perform engineering calculations (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, harmonics, equipment sizing, large motor starting, grounding, transient stability, electromagnetic transients, insulation coordination, etc.).Familiarity with high, medium, and low voltage electrical equipment (breakers, transformers, switchgear, etc.).Strong proficiency in relay coordination and Arc Flash analysis with ability to program protective relays.Adaptable, collaborative, and a systems thinker who can handle change and ambiguity.Proactive guidance on department design guides, standards, and systems; ability to lead change with the client and project team.Ability to work with supervision from the Project Engineering Manager and manage changes directly with the client.Commitment to safety and following instructions, policies, and procedures; willingness to work hours as required, including overtime and weekends.US work authorization required; sponsorship will not be considered.Successful completion of pre-employment drug screen and background check.Desired Qualifications
