As the Director of Design for WEX Payments , you will play a pivotal role in defining the strategic design vision and end-to-end user experience for one of WEX's most innovative businesses. Leading a dedicated team, you'll be at the forefront of digital transformation, creating intuitive, AI-driven payment experiences tailored for finance leaders, accounts payable teams, and platform partners.

This position requires a forward-thinking innovator, design strategist, and a trusted executive collaborator. You will simplify complex challenges, guide teams through fast-evolving landscapes, and advocate for human-centered design within the digital payments sector.

Your Responsibilities

Shape the Strategic Design Vision

  • Develop and promote a North Star experience for virtual card and B2B payments platforms, covering the entire ecosystem of partners, payers, and recipients.
  • Establish scalable design principles and quality standards aligned with our business objectives and the needs of our customers.
  • Navigate complex environments to clarify problem areas, helping to define data-driven products and services.
  • Lead engaging visioning sessions and workshops with executives and stakeholders to unify product, platform, and customer experience strategies.

Drive Design Excellence and Implementation

  • Coordinate seamless user experiences across comprehensive payment workflows, channels, and partner interactions.
  • Adopt an AI-focused design approach that harnesses data to create intelligent payment products and services.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and enterprise architecture teams to ensure smooth transition from design concepts to production.
  • Promote inclusive and compliant design practices that guarantee accessibility and usability for global audiences across various regulatory environments.

  • Lead, mentor, and expand a team of senior experience and service designers across the Payments division.
  • Foster a high-performance, collaborative culture that values curiosity, experimentation, and bold innovation.
  • Encourage cross-functional collaboration with Fuel and Benefits design teams to share patterns, standards, and innovative practices.
  • Act as a driving force for design leadership development, mentoring design leaders and advocating for the impact of design organization-wide.

    • Influence Through Insight and Storytelling

  • Translate intricate payment workflows, technical structures, and strategic concepts into clear, actionable design narratives.
  • Create compelling experience maps, prototypes, and visual frameworks to guide priorities and inform executive decisions.
  • Encourage a culture of experimentation that aligns rapid prototyping with business strategies, customer risks, and market entry outcomes.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration : Trusted partner across product, engineering, operations, compliance, and go-to-market teams.

    • Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years in leadership roles within UX, service design, or product design, particularly in enterprise-scale environments.
  • 5+ years overseeing, developing, and advocating for high-performing design teams.
  • Experience presenting design initiatives to senior executives, adeptly managing feedback to achieve alignment.
  • Knowledge of fintech, B2B payments, economic banking, or financial operations software is highly advantageous.
  • Proven success in designing secure, compliant experiences in regulated sectors (e.g., PCI, GDPR).

    • The base salary range is $158,000.00 - $210,000.00. Actual salaries may vary based on factors such as qualifications, skills, and proficiency. This salary is a component of WEX's total compensation, which may also include bonuses.
