UNION POSITIONS : The internal salary range is used for applicants who are current NJ state employees with underlying classified status for promotional calculations who meet the requirements below. The external salary range is used for candidates who are not NJ state employees who meet the requirements below.

Position Overview :
Under Collegewide Academics, the Writing Program works with departments on developing a Writing-Enriched Curriculum, works closely with the First Year Seminar course, our first-year writing course, oversees the first year Writing Studio course, and develops and maintains a robust culture of writing at TCNJ.
Working closely with the First Year Seminar and each department, the Director of Writing ensures that each department communicates the value of writing to their students, so that all students understand that no matter what the major or career track, critical thinking and composing is necessary for all writing intensive courses, essential for graduating literate and communication-savvy students and citizens, and crucial for students in securing employment.
The Director of Writing oversees and provides direction for all aspects of the Writing Program at TCNJ, including supervision of professional and student staff. The Director is the primary support for writing intensive courses, a Writing Enriched Curriculum, writing in the First Year Seminar, and the FYW Studio course.
Responsibilities :
Writing-Enriched Curriculum (WEC)
- Work with each academic department on a Writing-Enriched Curriculum (WEC) by identifying the writing expectations in the discipline and the courses in which students develop this disciplinary writing experience;
- Schedule meetings to refine the WEC Writing Plan;
- Recommend approval of the finished WEC Plan to the College Core Council for approval.
Teach First-Year Seminar
Teach one section of FYS each semester.Serve as Co-Director of the First-Year Seminar Program
Advise the FSCC on writing in the First Seminar, particularly for the writing instruction / writing intensive component of the course, including approaches to AI;Ensure that faculty understand the FYS as the first year course that provides writing instruction and a writing intensive experience and provide strategies for instructors to create a consistent plan for teaching writing in the FYS;Provide faculty development writing workshops for faculty teaching FYS;Review FYS syllabi for writing instruction and a writing intensive approach in the class, and make any necessary suggestions;Visit classes for new FYS faculty.Support Faculty
Consult with faculty on writing intensive courses;Provide faculty development writing workshops for any writing intensive courses;Meet individually with faculty for additional and specific concerns in the writing classroom.Oversee the First Year Writing Studio
Lead the planning and oversight of the Studio course;Support the Writing Program Coordinator in the implementation of the Studio courses;Consult and assist with any issues that may arise; - Attend all FYW Studio faculty meetings.Team Management
Recruit, hire, train and manage full-time Writing Program staff, including developing performance standards, completing required evaluations, and implementing alternative procedures to improve performance as required.Support the student workers and tutors as needed.Reporting and Assessment
Evaluate all Writing Program goals, processes, operations and implement alternative procedures to meet program objectives as needed.Lead writing assessment for the FYS and FYW Studio with the support from the Writing Program Coordinator;Create an assessment plan with the Writing Program Coordinator to assess students’ progress in the FYW Studio;Assessing data from the writing in the FYS, compile, interpret, share the data, and, depending on the results, recommend steps for moving forward;Based on data retrieved through writing samples from the courses and from following trends we might identify through assessment, determine any changes we might need to make in instruction and course design;Complete annual report and other program review requirements.Lead the Writing Program Practicum Experience
Identify FYS instructors interested in taking on an English graduate student as a TA in the FYS;Interview potential graduate student candidates with the English Dept. Graduate Coordinator;Match graduate students identified by the English Dept. with FYS instructors;Meet with the Practicum mentor twice a semester to discuss progress;Include graduate students in Fall writing workshops for FYS instructors.Leadership
Serve as liaison / campus leader .... WritingConsult with the Assistant Provost on planning and priorities.Establish and maintain communication and cooperative working relationships with college administrators, faculty, staff, students and student organizations, and community partners.Represent the Writing Program on and off campus.Serve on campus-wide councils / committees and support campus-wide initiatives including : College Core Council, First Seminar Coordinating Committee, Academic Leaders.Advise and counsel students, parents and / or staff when emergent problems occur within Writing programs.Professional DevelopmentAttend Conference on College Composition and Communication and New Jersey Writing Alliance;Stay current on AI work around campus, particularly on approaches for the writing classroom;Attend other relevant on and off campus trainings and workshops.Qualifications : Required :
Master’s degree in Rhetoric & Composition, Writing Studies, English, or related field.Ten years’ experience teaching writing in higher education.Ability to communicate clearly in workshops, presentations, and in written research reports.Ability to work independently on assigned research tasks, to direct initiatives, to lead faculty workshops, and to work as part of a team.Ability to organize priorities in completing multiple simultaneous projects.Preferred :
Experience as a Writing Program Administrator (WPA) or administration of required writing courses for either Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), Writing in the Disciplines (WID), or Writing Enriched Curriculum (WEC) programs.PhD or ABD in Rhetoric & Composition, English, Communications or related field.Persons with disabilities may request reasonable accommodations in order to perform the essential functions of the position.
