The Roberts County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the creation of a new position within the Detention Center — the Medical Support Assistant (MSA) — aimed at improving access to timely, high-quality care for inmates, particularly those battling substance abuse or in need of ongoing medical support.

About the Position

The Medical Support Assistant works alongside the Jail Captain, nurses, correctional officers, and outside healthcare providers to ensure the efficient, sanitary, and secure delivery of healthcare services within the Roberts County Jail. The MSA plays a key role in coordinating medical appointments, maintaining records, and supporting medication administration and basic health screenings.

This position not only enhances the facility’s ability to respond quickly to medical needs but also supports rehabilitation by ensuring inmates receive reliable, structured medical and substance abuse assistance.

Essential Duties Include :

Assisting medical staff with examinations, treatments, and follow-up care within scope of training.

Taking and recording vital signs, assisting with intake screenings, and maintaining accurate medical documentation.

Preparing and sanitizing medical areas and equipment to maintain a clean and safe environment.

Maintaining inventory and assisting with medication documentation and chain-of-custody procedures.

Coordinating inmate medical appointments, transports, and communication with healthcare providers and pharmacies.

Observing and reporting inmate behavior or signs of illness to appropriate staff.

Providing basic first aid or CPR during medical emergencies until higher medical authority arrives.

Qualifications :

CNA certification preferred (or equivalent healthcare or medical office experience).

Current CPR / BLS certification required.

Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

Experience in correctional, clinical, or emergency care settings preferred.

Knowledge of medical terminology and strong documentation skills.

Ability to work effectively in a secure, team-oriented environment and maintain strict confidentiality.

Position Details

Status : Full-Time or Part-Time

Pay Range : $18.00 – $22.00 / hour (DOE)

Location : Roberts County Detention Center, Sisseton, SD

Schedule - Flexible

Applicants must pass a background check, drug screening, and meet correctional facility standards for fitness and character.
