Job Description
About the Role
We are seeking a reliable, skilled Facilities & Maintenance Handyman to support our organization’s facility repair and upkeep needs. This person will be based at our Minneapolis head office but will also travel to our network of 245D respite houses and other sites as needed. When not actively repairing or maintaining, the employee will be on standby at the head office, ready for call-outs.
Key Responsibilities
Perform general repair, maintenance, and upkeep of our respite houses (245D homes) and office / facility sites. Tasks include, but are not limited to : patching and repairing walls (holes, damage, painting), repairing or replacing furniture and fixtures, maintaining and repairing bathroom plumbing (leaks, faucets, toilets), addressing general building infrastructure issues (doors, windows, trim, flooring, ceilings).
Respond to damage or wear-and-tear caused in our residences, especially where children or high-use areas may lead to repeated repair needs.
Conduct routine preventive maintenance across sites (e.g., checking for leaks, worn flooring, loose fixtures, safety hazards) and prepare reports or logs of needed work and status.
Serve as the “on-call” support : when scheduled tasks are completed or none are pending, remain at the head office site, ready to deploy to other sites as needed.
Manage and coordinate minor repair materials and tools : maintain inventory of supplies, ensure tools are functional, order or request materials when needed, and track expenditure.
Work cooperatively with program, operations, and maintenance staff to schedule visits, minimize disruption to residents, and ensure safety and compliance of sites.
Ensure work is completed to high-quality standards, meets safety and building code requirements where applicable, and is documented appropriately.
Maintain a clean, professional appearance and work responsibly in residential settings (often inhabited by vulnerable populations) and in office settings.
Required Qualifications & Attributes
Minimum 2 years of hands-on general maintenance / repair experience (walls, fixtures, plumbing basics, furniture / furnishings) in a residential or commercial setting.
Comfort and experience working across multiple sites (offices, residential houses) and with a variety of tasks rather than a single specialization.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, prioritize tasks when on standby, and respond quickly when dispatched.
Basic plumbing repair skills (fixing leaks, faucets, toilets), basic carpentry / furnishing repair, drywall / patching and paint, furniture repair / assembly, and general building maintenance tasks.
Good communication skills; ability to work discreetly in live-in residences with children present; professionalism; respect for clients / residents; and confidentiality.
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation (for travel between sites).
Ability to lift, carry, climb ladders, safely use tools, and access various facility areas.
Flexibility to respond to on-call needs on site, sometimes outside of typical scheduled hours.
Preferred : certifications or training in facility maintenance, building trades, or plumbing / handyman work. Experience working in residential care or group home settings is a plus.
Commitment to safety : knowledge of safe working practices, facility safety, ability to identify hazards, and follow safety protocols.
Reporting & Schedule
Reports to the Director of Finance & Operations at the head office.
Base location : Minneapolis head office. Travel to other sites as required
Standard work-week : Monday-Friday during business hours for scheduled tasks. During on-call duty (when no active tasks), must remain available and on-site at the head office to deploy. Some flexibility for evening or weekend call‐outs may be necessary.
Tools and equipment : The Company will provide standard tools and supplies; the employee may be expected to maintain inventory and report tool condition / supply levels.
Why this role matters

Damage, wear, or delays in maintenance can impact our residents and services. This role ensures quick, skilled response to repairs, helps maintain continuity of operations, and supports a safe, high-quality environment for our clients and staff.
