This is a one-year contract position with potential for extension.

Department / Organization

The Institute for Carbon Management (ICM) is a cross-campus technology-translation entity at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). ICM translates pioneering carbon management strategies from the laboratory / bench-scale to pre-commercial / commercial-scale devices, prototypes, and software solutions. ICM focuses on technologies for CO2 removal, utilization, and avoidance, and on creating new supply chains and processing approaches for critical materials for the clean energy transition.

Position Summary

ICM is seeking experienced Sr. Chemical Process Engineers to join a multi-disciplinary team developing carbon removal technologies for global commercialization. The process engineer will be responsible for design, development and optimization of process and plant design across scales (bench, pilot, commercial) and ensuring safe, compliant operation while adhering to safety and environmental standards and regulations. The role involves collaboration with diverse subject matter experts to deliver impact on schedule and results.

Responsibilities

Design, develop and optimize chemical processes and plant configurations across scales; ensure safe operations and regulatory compliance; collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to meet project milestones; contribute to process simulations, scale-up, and technology transfer efforts.

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of experience in chemical process design and developing basic or detailed engineering packages for metallurgical or oil refining / petrochemical / gas processing / chemical industries. (Required)
  • 5 or more years of experience as a project engineer / manager delivering or supporting capital projects. (Required)
  • Experience with process simulation (e.g., Aspen Plus). (Preferred)
  • Experience with electrochemical systems including electrolyzers and fuel cells. (Preferred)
  • Has worked for, or with, EPC teams in both office and project-site locations. (Preferred)
  • Proficiency with Aspen Plus modeling and simulation, and Aspen Icarus cost estimation tools. (Required)
  • A self-starter who collaborates effectively, communicates clearly, and drives progress. (Required)
  • Knowledge of a wide range of manufacturing / prototyping processes. (Required)
  • Strong grasp of engineering fundamentals. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ownership mindset, results-oriented, and accountability. (Required)
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work with internal stakeholders, partners, and external vendors. (Required)
  • Structured thinking with ability to define development plans and track execution. (Required)
  • Strong chemistry knowledge. (Preferred)
  • Passion for climate technology. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering, preferably Chemical Engineering. (Required)
  • Master's Degree in engineering, preferably Chemical Engineering. (Preferred)
