Job Requirements :

  • Staff the law library reference desk according to a weekly reference schedule during evening and / or weekend hours. Occasionally staff daytime, weekday hours. Provide a wide range of reference and specialized research assistance, including referring patrons to legal research resources, providing instruction on their use, and suggesting alternative resources. Serve law students, faculty, the university community, legal professionals, and the public in person, over the phone, and via email or other electronic communication.
  • Create, revise, and update research guides, bibliographies, and other law library publications and web content as needed.
  • Participate in or complete projects supporting reference, research, or instructional needs, such as collection development and research instruction sessions or presentations.
  • Collaborate in developing, evaluating, and implementing reference goals, policies, procedures, and services.

Experience and Qualifications :

  • Master's in Library Science from an ALA-accredited program combined with knowledge of legal bibliography and research techniques in multiple formats. Current enrollment in an ALA-accredited Master's in Library Science program is acceptable if the candidate holds a Juris Doctorate.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online legal research systems (e.g., Bloomberg Law, Vital Law, Fastcase, HeinOnline, Lexis, Westlaw) and web-based legal resources, as well as print legal research materials.
  • Strong service orientation and ability to work with diverse patrons.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office applications.
  • Effective communication skills in English, both oral and written.
