Head of Adult Services - Plainfield Public Library The Plainfield Public Library is seeking an innovative and dedicated Head of Adult Services Librarian to oversee and enhance adult services at our library. This role involves leading and supervising the adult services and reference teams, developing engaging programs, curating a balanced collection, and ensuring excellent patron experiences. The ideal candidate is passionate about library services, committed to community engagement, and skilled in leadership and program development.

Key Responsibilities :

Plan, implement, publicize, execute, and evaluate engaging adult programs, including book discussions, educational workshops, and recreational activities.

Supervise, train, and support staff within the Adult Services department.

Manage and maintain the library’s adult materials collection including selection, purchasing, and weeding materials as needed.

Provide expert reference, advisory, and referral services to library patrons.

Identify community needs and explore opportunities for new programs, collections, and services.

Establish goals and objectives for Adult Services to align with the library’s mission.

Stay current with emerging library trends, technologies, and best practices.

Assist at the information desk or other public service points as required.

Develop and maintain online resources and digital content related to Adult Services.

Oversee information and tech desk operations and ensure adequate staff coverage.

Build relationships with local organizations and community groups to enhance outreach efforts.

Represent the library at professional events, conferences, and meetings.

Engage in community outreach and promote library services both internally and externally.

Collect and report statistical data related to Adult Services programs and usage.

Assist in budget preparation and resource allocation.

Organize displays, exhibits, booklists, and contribute to website and social media content.

Perform other duties as needed.

Required Education and Experience :

Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution.

At least five years of experience working in a public library, with a minimum of three years in a supervisory role.

Skills & Competencies :

Strong understanding of modern library practices, policies, and administration.

Proficiency with automated library systems, digital tools, and web-based technologies.

Excellent organizational and project management skills, with the ability to multitask effectively.

Initiative, sound judgment, and adaptability in a dynamic environment.

Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally with patrons, staff, and community partners.

Proficient in Canva and social media promotion.

Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Fluency in Spanish language is highly desired.

Salary and Benefits :

Salary offered at $65K commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits package includes Medical Insurance, Dental insurance, life insurance, and participation in the New Jersey Public Employee Retirement System (PERS). Paid holidays, vacation, and sick time. Participation in NJLA, PLA, and ALA is encouraged. NJLA membership is paid by the Library. This is a full-time, 35 hours a week; Civil Service position.
