Job Summary
Performs various patient care and related services in providing for the personal needs and comforts of patients in assigned ED. Also performs order entry functions, supply stocking and maintenance of patient rooms. Acts as a liaison between nursing, physicians, hospital personnel, patients and visitors. Accepts changes in duties when appropriate. Demonstrates flexibility when asked or condition dictates.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum Education : High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Minimum Years of Experience : 1 year of patient care experience in an acute care setting
- Substitutable Education & Experience (Optional) : 1 year of experience can be substituted for those who are a Certified Nursing Assistant, have an EMT certification, or have completed a Fundamentals of Nursing course
- Required Certifications / Licensure : Basic Life Support and Crisis Prevention Institute Training required within 90 days of hire. Refer to Mandatory Certification Requirements and Training for Nurses policy and procedure.
- Required Training : Basic knowledge of computer skills; knowledge and effective use of medical terminology; working knowledge of computer systems to provide patient-centered care (order entry, chart documentation).
Essential Functions
The ED Technician performs assigned patient care tasks under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse. Performs clerical functions to enhance delivery of patient care.After specialized training, places patients on oxygen therapy and pulse oximetry; places patients on cardiac monitor and obtains Lead II strip for chart; takes and records vital signs; weighs patients and reports unusual findings to the RN; collects blood specimens and delivers to the lab; sets up sterile trays and assists physicians with procedures; applies orthopedic splints and assists with casting; provides crutch walking instruction; sets up for chest drainage and obtains 12-lead EKG tracings; inserts Foley catheters and maintains care; serves as Mayday team member (performs CPR and obtains supplies during codes); transports patients; performs urinary catheterization as directed; provides 1 : 1 observation for Immediate Treatment Certification.Functions as a Unit Secretary when necessary : answers phones and nurse call system, conducts rounds, maintains chart accuracy, schedules procedures, and coordinates transportation; monitors bed assignment and delays.Facilitates patient flow and notifies Clinical Coordinator of ready rooms / process delays.Troubleshoots delays in acquiring specimens and reports results.Prepares rooms after discharge and updates EPIC tracker.Rounds on zone patients and ensures call lights are within reach.Assists with admission procedures and orients patients to the environment.Directs patients to undress for exams and ensures safety measures to prevent injury.Assists with personal hygiene, bedpan / urinal care, and records output.Changes linen, prepares environment, and assists with transfers and transports as needed.Maintains oxygen tanks and provides post-mortem care and transport to the morgue.Duties & Responsibilities
Assist nurses and physicians with administration of treatments and examinations.Place supplies and trays in rooms; prepare rooms and equipment.Maintain clean utility rooms and ensure instruments are returned to Sterile Processing.QA checks, restock carts, anticipate discharge / transfer needs, and communicate changes in patient condition to the RN.Inform nurse of STAT or abnormal results; participate in performance improvement and patient safety initiatives.Attend meetings and participate in process improvement; assist with shift turnover and training of new staff as requested.Conserve and account for supplies; maintain a safe and clean environment; report malfunctioning equipment.Document timely, legible information in the patient record; manage hazardous waste per policy and complete required training.Perform all other duties as assigned.Benefits include Day ONE medical, dental and life insurance; FSAs; 403(b) with company match; employer-paid life and disability coverage after 90 days; tuition reimbursement; student loan forgiveness.
