UMC Hospitalist Advance Practice Provider

Education and Experience :

Graduate of an accredited Masters Level Program for Advanced Practice Provider (i.e. Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners).Three to five years of clinical experience preferred, entry level accepted.

Environmental / Working Conditions

Works inside and under normal temperate conditions with adequate light, in a well-ventilated, clean area. Some areas are limited in space, and some patient rooms / specific units may be cold. Usually works around others, may expect some moderate noise. Frequently works with biologic or infectious agents, and may be exposed to communicable diseases. May come in contact with irritating chemicals or sprays. May be exposed to muscular strain in supporting, lifting and assisting patients.

Job Description :

The Hospitalist Medicine’s Advance Practice Provider will provide medical screening examination, initiates appropriate medical care and manages the disposition of patients under the direction and supervision of a licensed hospitalist medicine physician. Has the responsibility to evaluate and treat in conjunction with the primary physician. Assist in completing patient History and Physical and discharge paperwork for patients being treated at UMC for hospitalist medicine. Will also contribute in maintaining compliance with core measures, delinquent records, verbal orders, and any other measures deemed necessary by the Hospitalist Medicine team or Chief Medical Officer. Support in meeting documentation standards in conjunction with recommendations of the Clinical Documentation Specialists. Assist in facilitating admissions from the Emergency Center. Coordinates with nursing staff for medication orders and any changes needed in the current treatment plan for hospitalist medicine patients. Will adhere to policies, procedures and standards of practice as defined by and / or stated by UMC Standard Policy and Det Norske Veritas (DNV).

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

Must hold or be eligible for Texas State Licensure (i.e. Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners).

Physical Capabilities

The Advance Practice Providershould have good physical stamina, be able to be on feet most of the day, and be fairly strong and energetic. Work frequently requires much walking, standing, carrying, talking, hearing and listening. Lifting more than 50 pounds is occasionally required to reposition patients. Hours may be long and irregular, and may include weekend’s as-well-as emergency call.

Skills and Abilities

Must be able to apply the theory of an Advance Practice Provider (i.e. Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners under the bylaws of said Texas Board.

Should speak intelligently and in a professional manner before others, demonstrate good public relations, demonstrate assertiveness, flexibility and tact.

Perform patient assessments.

Have ability and competence to operate necessary equipment.

Must be able to instill confidence in patients, physicians, and personnel.

Determine appropriate care for the patient in conjunction with the primary care physician.

Make decisions independently.

Adapt to emergency conditions. Be alert to change in the patient’s condition.

Demonstrate economic use of time.

Know techniques of assisting and handling patients.

Must possess a high degree of accuracy in carrying out prescriptions, receiving and translating information, charting and reporting.

Demonstrate a high level of critical thinking.

Understand Departmental / Facility policies, procedures and regulations.

Be aware of inter / intradepartmental communication.
