OVERVIEW :
Since 1946, the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) has delivered the VCS benefits to millions of Veterans enrolled in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare system, the largest Healthcare system in the United States. VCS is a program office in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) that is Veteran-facing, providing reasonably priced goods and services for the comfort and well-being of America’s Veterans.
Duties :
Safety & Sanitation Oversight : Ensure compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation standards, including ServSafe guidelines and proper food handling practices. Maintain cleanliness and proper attire among all food service staff.
Staff Leadership & Scheduling : Assign and adjust daily employee duties to meet workload and operational needs. Provide guidance, address coverage gaps, and ensure efficient service.
Training & Performance Management : Train employees by example on proper work methods, safe food handling, and sanitation. Conduct performance appraisals, counsel staff, and take corrective action when necessary.
Food Quality & Presentation : Oversee preparation and service to ensure meals are properly seasoned, portioned, and attractively presented in a timely manner.
Operational & Inventory Management : Order, receive, and store food and supplies to maintain adequate stock for menu needs. Monitor work areas, equipment, and compliance with VCS policies
A current, valid REAL ID is required to work at Veterans Canteen Service.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills : Able to read, write, prioritize tasks, and follow verbal and written instructions. Demonstrates strong customer service and interpersonal skills when interacting with staff, management, and customers.
Supervisory & Food Service Expertise : Experienced in supervising employees and knowledgeable in food service operations, kitchen equipment, and safe food handling and sanitation procedures.
Professionalism & Composure : Maintains a professional appearance and a positive attitude under pressure while fostering a productive and respectful work environment.
Operational Knowledge : Thorough understanding of PatriotCafe operations, including product movement, ordering levels, and adherence to VCS and VA policies and procedures. Knows appropriate actions to take in case of employee injury or illness.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions : Able to stand, bend, and lift up to 40 pounds. Works in a fast-paced environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, and cleaning chemicals
