Orientation Assistants work to make a newcomer non-English speaking student feel more comfortable in the new school environment. Orientation Assistants may translate for the teacher, explain classroom rules / policies to students and parents, help facilitate conversation between the classroom teacher and parents and help the new student to better understand and navigate the school system.
Candidates should understand and speak clearly and distinctly in English and the desired language (Q'anjob'al); listen to English and speak in the desired language simultaneously; listen to English or the desired language for several paragraphs and repeat the information accurately back to the listening audience; Maintain confidentiality and impartiality; Work effectively with District personnel and the public. Qualifications also include : graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency. Two years of experience providing simultaneous and consecutive oral interpretations.
This is an on-call position with assignments varying in length. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS : The successful candidate must subscribe to an Oath of Allegiance, submit to a general tuberculosis examination, be fingerprinted, complete a pre-placement physical examination, and show proof of their identity and right to work in the United States as conditions of employment.
CERTIFICATION : When a vacant position is to be filled, the Classified Personnel Director submits to the appointing power the names of the top three "ranks." This is known as "certification," and the appointing power may select any one of the persons certified.
