Firefighter Paramedic
The person in this position works under direction to help ensure the safety of and care for all citizens and visitors of the Orange Beach jurisdiction. Provide life and property conservation by rendering basic and advanced life support to individuals of injury, illness, accidents and fire / rescue emergencies. Supervises all patient care on scenes and assists in training and evaluation of other medical personnel. Provide firefighting skills to include suppression, search, rescue and overhaul. Maintain license and proficiency through training and study. Handle documentation of medical records, call log, reports and inventory. Maintain equipment, general medical supplies and cleaning of the same. Restock emergency vehicles for next call.

Essential functions :
Patient Care
Performs patient care under state and physician protocol / orders to victims of an emergency, be it fire, accident, natural disaster, or general illness.
Provides basic life support to include :
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Control of bleeding
- Treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, head injuries, gastrointestinal and genitourinary injuries, medical emergencies, childbirth and pediatric problems, psychological, environmental injuries; and bandaging.
Provides advanced life support to include :
Cardiopulmonary resuscitationSupervising all aspects of patient careAirway management to include endotracheal intubation, O2 therapy, and airway adjunctsElectrocardiogram rhythm interpretation and recognition, electrical therapy to include defibrillation, cardioversion, transcutaneous cardiac pacingPharmacologic therapy for allergic reactions, poisoning, overdoses, diabetic emergencies, chest pain, seizures, cardiac rhythm disturbance and arrest; and fluid therapy.Intravenous fluid therapy.Communicates with Medical Director and emergency room nurses to coordinate treatment and continuation of care for patients, as well as communication with transporting agencies; fire communication center; police officials and air medical transport units.
Prepares patient for transport to appropriate medical facilities.
Documents incidents to include incident description, treatment and disposition.
Maintains equipment for readiness for next call, to include, cleaning, restocking and overall preparedness.
Fire Fighting
Apparatus operation, driving, pump operation, aerial devices and water craft.Hose operation, water supply, attack lines, hose maintenance and clean up.Searches emergency scene for trapped and / or injures victims, remove and care for victim.Operates various types of power and hand tools to facilitate forcible entry, ventilation and for extrication.Carry, position and climbs ladders to perform fire suppression.Aid and assists fellow firefighters.Gather information at emergency scene to facilitate complete and accurate documentation of incident.Operation and care of ground ladders - positioning, raising, climbing, performing rescues and assuring safety in all operations.Prepares equipment for next call or emergency. Cleans vehicle, replaces hoses, clean ladder and other portable equipment as needed.Supervision / Miscellaneous
Assumes supervisory duties in the absence of higher ranking personnel and accepts responsibility of patient care operations.Supervises and coordinates emergency incidents in the absence of higher ranking personnel.Review field performance of subordinates daily and recommends ways to improve job performance.Supervises and assists in cleaning and maintenance of facility, grounds, vehicles and equipment.Assists with training of all personnel.Assists in evaluating subordinate EMT's to shift officer on medical ability as it relates to quarterly evaluations.Maintains safe work environment.Performs pre-fire plans of public buildings, lectures on fire safety and health care, and performs related fire prevention, public education and awareness activities.Completes activity reports, equipment accountability reports for state and regional and other required reports and related correspondence.Acknowledges and carries out orders.Training
Maintains Required Paramedic License (Credentialing). Maintains State Firefighter Certification. Participates in review and critique of pre-hospital run reports with Medical Control Physician each month.
Miscellaneous
Completes activity reports, equipment accountability reports for state and region, and other required reports and related correspondence. Maintains related files.Performs pre-fire plans of public buildings, lectures on fire safety and health care, and performs related fire prevention, public education and awareness activities.Inventories and orders medical equipment and supplies.Performs related activities as required for operation of the department.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Possess a valid Driver's License.Willing to work non-standard hours to provide 24 hours coverage.Willing to travel to attend schools.Willing to work overtime as required to complete work assignments.Education, Experience and Certifications :
Possess a High School diploma or the equivalent.Possess State Firefighter Certification OR the ability to become certified within one year of employment.Experience as Firefighter / Paramedic preferred.Possess a NREMT paramedic license.Physical demands :
The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restricted areas, and defending oneself or another from a physical attack. See well enough drive, read, and operate equipment. Hear well enough to receive orders and information via radio or telephone. Speak well enough to be heard under adverse conditions, communicate by radio or telephone, and address small groups. The body movement or mobility to perform rescue and fire ground activities, meet physical requirements of a Firefighter Paramedic and perform day-to-day activities.
Work environment :
The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precaution, e.g., working at heights under extreme outdoor weather conditions, subject to possible physical attack or mob conditions, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
