Medical Assistant

Performs routine paraprofessional, clerical, and medical assistant work in providing public health care and treatment within the scope of services of specialty clinics at the Adams County Health Department. Navigation and application of the electronic health record.

Responsible for :

  • Implementation of applicable policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • Attend required staff meetings and training.
  • Maintains inventory of clinic supplies and orders supplies as needed.
  • Timely and accurate data entry into the electronic health record.
  • Annual competency trainings and other required trainings as assigned.

Clinical Responsibilities :

  • Prepares and maintains clinic area and lab. Cleans, sanitizes, and stocks clinic area and cleans and sterilizes instruments daily. Monitors and performs autoclave sterilization testing.
  • Performs QA (Quality Assurance) testing on all CLIA waived tests performed in clinic.
  • Obtains client medical and social histories. Reviews records for completeness and accuracy of information, and records purpose of client visits.
  • Takes vital signs, height, and weight measurements, calculate BMI.
  • Performs lab tests as specified, including venipuncture, and prepares specimens for transport to outside labs. Records complete and accurate results.
  • Maintains a clinical lab book through recording daily lab procedures conducted, obtaining and tracking lab reports, and assisting with lab billing procedures.
  • Assists the APN (Advanced Practice Nurse) and physician in client exams and procedures.
  • Prepare and dispense medications as ordered.
  • Performs delegated duties from RN (Registered Nurse) and APN, including Depo-Provera injections.
  • Provides educational information to client and family according to visit.
  • Schedules clients in accordance with medical protocols.
  • Performs routine clerical and reception work as needed to support clinic activities including assisting clients, answering phones, maintaining records, entering chart data and collecting money.
  • Emergency Preparedness Duties :

  • Employee responds, as required, to support public health emergencies, incidents and events. Employee participates in all exercises and drills on emergency preparedness, as required.
  • Completes trainings identified as appropriate for this level employee.
  • Additional Duties :

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new employees, students, and interns. Participates in QA / QI project as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • HIPAA Statement : Maintain sensitive & confidential client information according to the HIPAA policy confidentiality requirements.

    Knowledge of :

  • Maintains knowledge about current practice guidelines and continuing education topics pertinent to the Medical Assistant role.
  • Ability to :

  • To perform phlebotomy, collect specimens, preparing patients for examination, vital signs, CPR and first-aid procedures, using centrifuges, and performing lab tests, sterilizing equipment, requesting records and billing information, tracking inventory and ordering supplies, and providing patient education.
  • Capture health visit information into the electronic health record.
  • Provide helpful, accurate, and direct assistance to internal and external customers via phone and in-person.
  • Uses excellent phone manners and office etiquette.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships all internal and external customers.
  • Equipment used : Standard office equipment including, but not limited to, personal computer and associated hardware and software, telephone, copier, calculator, and audio-visual equipment. Maintenance of CLIA waived laboratory equipment.

    Education and Experience : This position is a journey-level job in the Medical Assistant series and requires successful graduation from a medical assistant training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CMHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or by the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association in collaboration with the American Association of Medical Assistants.

    Special Qualifications :

  • Requires successful completion of the AMA-AAMA certification exam or the American Medical Technologists RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) examination.
  • CPR certification
  • Must maintain certification as required by the AAMA or American Medical Technologists.
  • Requires minimum of one year working as a medical assistant.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license.
  • Working Conditions and Physical Requirements :

  • Work is primarily conducted indoors with occasional time spent in an outside environment. Routine exposures and hazards of a typical office environment. Occasionally required to work after normal work hours to attend governmental meetings.
  • Requires sufficient hearing and speech ability to communicate verbally in response to inquiries, complaints, and to speak to groups of people or the media in an informational or training situation
  • Requires ability to lift and carry objects occasionally up to 15 pounds.
  • Requires manual dexterity to operate computer and office equipment.
  • Requires the ability to sit and perform administrative and computer work for significant periods of time.
  • Language Pay Incentive is available for employees who utilize their skill in Spanish or ASL 30% of the time or more and pass a basic fluency test. The $2,000 Annual Base Pay adjustment is spread out over the year.
