The Registered Occupational Therapist (OTR) is expected to evaluate, assess, diagnose, and treat individuals of all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics, who have health-related conditions that limit their ability to perform daily function and work-related tasks. The OTR uses therapeutic techniques to improve, rehabilitate, or maintain a patient’s motor skills and overall ability to perform everyday activities. They help patients meet goals to develop, recover, improve, and maintain skills needed for daily living and work. The also prescribe, measure, fit, and train patients to use assistive and adaptive devices. The OTR performs home safety evaluations to identify potential safety and accessibility issues. The OTR may provide care for people in a variety of settings, including inpatient hospital (observation, acute care and / or skilled swing bed), outpatient clinic, schools, skilled nursing facilities, home health care, sports and fitness facilities, and work-site settings. The OTR is responsible for obtaining patient information, orienting patients to purpose and procedures of OT interventions, keep appropriate records, and identifying / following documentation criteria in obtaining third party payer coverage. The OTR also develops therapy schedule; follows ND state regulations for supervision of support personnel (Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapy Students, and Rehab Aides), participates in quality improvement / management activities; attends weekly interdisciplinary meetings (Care Conference and Discharge Planning); collaborates with staff of other disciplines in regards to patient care; and assures completion of documentation.
