Maintenance Worker I / II - Field Utilities

The City of Vacaville invites applications for the position of Maintenance Worker I / II in the Field Utilities section of the Utilities Department. Currently, we have four (4) vacancies to fill. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list to be used for any future vacancies City-wide over the next 12-month period.

A City of Vacaville Maintenance Worker I / II - Field Utilities performs a variety of maintenance, repair, installation, and underground construction work related to water distribution and wastewater collection including, but not limited to :

• Installation, maintenance, repair, and replacement of water meters, service lines, and mains up to 30 inches in diameter in a pressurized potable water system.
• Valve exercising, fire hydrant inspections, and meter testing.
• Installation, flushing, closed circuit television (CCTV), maintenance, repair, and replacement of gravity-fed and pressurized sewer laterals and mains.
• Use of a variety of tools and equipment, including heavy construction equipment.

Maintenance Workers may be required to respond to emergency standby calls on nights, weekends, and holidays. This position is "safety sensitive" as defined by the Federal Department of Transportation (DOT) Program and is therefore subject to the random Drug / Alcohol Testing Program. Maintenance Workers perform mandatory standby duty which includes the requirement to respond to emergency callouts within 30 minutes.

Maintenance Worker I / II - Field Utilities is flexibly staffed and may be filled at either the I (entry-level) or II (journey-level), depending on the qualifications of the candidates. Maintenance Worker II - Field Utilities candidates are expected to have a wide range of knowledge related to water distribution and / or sewer collection system operation, repair, and maintenance practices. Employees in the Maintenance Worker I - Field Utilities classification may advance to the Maintenance Worker II - Field Utilities level after meeting higher qualifications.

Salary Range : Maintenance Worker I - Field Utilities : $64,229 - $78,071 / year. Maintenance Worker II - Field Utilities : $72,558 - $88,195 / year. Additional Compensation Opportunity : Salary Range for I / II with additional required certifications (5% of base pay) : $67,441 - $92,605 / year. Salary Range for I / II with Class A commercial driver's license ($2,400 / year) : $66,629 - $90,595 / year. Salary Range for I / II with additional required certifications and Class A commercial driver's license : $69,841 - $95,005 / year.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in maintenance and underground construction in addition to the following desirable knowledge, skills, and abilities : knowledge of water and wastewater utility systems; ability to safely perform a variety of skilled underground construction work; ability to operate a variety of power tools and heavy equipment; knowledge of AWWA standards and State drinking water regulations; knowledge of OSHA regulations, traffic control, and City established safe work practices; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work; ability to maintain a positive work environment, problem solve under stress, and be a team-oriented individual.

Minimum Qualifications :

Maintenance Worker I - Field Utilities : Education and Experience - Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be : Education : Equivalent to high school diploma, supplemented with training or college-level courses related to water distribution, water quality or wastewater systems and other related topics. Experience : One year experience performing construction, repair, or maintenance work, preferably related to plumbing or pipefitting. License or Certificates : Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record are required as conditions of initial and continued employment. A valid Class B driver's license with Tanker Endorsement must be obtained prior to completion of probation. Some positions may require an unrestricted Class A driver's license with Tanker Endorsement. Employees are subject to random testing per DOT regulations. A valid certificate or a notice of passing the examination for the Grade I Water Distribution Operators issued by the State of California Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water is desirable. Note : a valid Grade I certificate must be obtained prior to the completion of the probationary period. A Grade 1 Collection System Maintenance Certificate from the California Water Environmental Association (CWEA) is desirable and must be obtained prior to completion of the probationary period. A valid First Aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification from the American Red Cross or other certified and recognized training organization must be obtained prior to the completion of probation. The maintenance of valid licenses and certificates is a condition of continued employment. In the event the State of California requires a Haz Mat Technician or Haz Mat Endorsement to perform current functions, employees must obtain and maintain such certification.

Maintenance Worker II - Field Utilities : Education and Experience - Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be : Education : Equivalent to high school diploma, supplemented with training and college-level courses related to water distribution or wastewater systems. Experience : One year experience performing duties of a Maintenance Worker I - Field Utilities in the City of Vacaville. If hired from the outside, must have two years experience of construction, repair, or maintenance work related to plumbing and pipefitting. License or Certificates : Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license with a Tanker Endorsement and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment. Some positions may require an unrestricted Class A driver's license with Tanker Endorsement. Employees are subject to random testing per DOT regulations.
