Overview
Electrical Engineer - Electrical Power System Studies (EHV Focus) at Black & Veatch . This leadership role focuses on Power System Studies for Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission systems, including mentoring a team and developing analytical models for utility transmission projects.
Location : Overland Park, KS (HQ) or various regional offices as listed.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) in the modeling and simulation of EHV transmission systems.
- Make EHV study recommendations to influence risk mitigation through project execution plans.
- Communicate EHV study capabilities to internal and external clients to support project capture and development.
- Lead and support the preparation of computer-based models for EHV transmission systems.
- Perform and oversee a wide range of power system studies, including :
- Load Flow and Short Circuit Analysis
- Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Studies, including Insulation Coordination, Temporary Overvoltage (TOV), Switching Overvoltage (SOV), Transient Recovery Voltage (TRV), Very Fast Transients (VFT), and Lightning Effects
- Dynamic Stability Analysis
- Corona and Field Effects Studies (Audible Noise, RI / TVI, Electric Field Intensity)
- Electromagnetic Field (EMF) analysis
- Induced Voltage and Current Analysis
- Grounding System Design and Safety Evaluation
- Apply advanced engineering principles to develop and enhance EHV engineering standards.
- Provide technical leadership on design guides, engineering codes, and industry standards.
- Ensure quality and compliance by adhering to engineering and project delivery standards (QA / QC).
- Mentor team members and provide technical direction across disciplines.
- Coordinate with clients, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure alignment and successful project delivery.
- Support proposal development including scope of work, estimates, and schedules.
- Manage or contribute to multiple high-impact projects simultaneously.
- Develop clear written communications and facilitate collaboration with team members and clients.
- Operate effectively in a team environment and apply knowledge of NERC regions (e.g., PJM, ERCOT, MISO).
The ideal candidate will be located or willing to relocate to our World Headquarters in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City), or one of the following Regional Office Locations : Phoenix, AZ; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Ann Arbor, MI; Raleigh, NC.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program.Minimum of 5 years related work experience.Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated proficiency with power system modeling tools (PSSE, PowerGEN TARA, PSLF, PSCAD, PowerWorld, ASPEN OneLiner, CAPE, etc.).Experience in substation design (conceptual planning, physical layout, protection and control systems, relay design and coordination, documentation).Active Professional Engineer (PE) License in the state of residence or project needs.Certifications
Professional Engineer License (U.S. PE), preferredWork Environment
