Position Overview
The Behavioral / Emotional Specialist will provides structured behavioral and emotional support for students who need a temporary break from the classroom environment. The goal of this role is to help students regulate emotions, reflect on behavior, restore relationships, and return to class ready to learn.
This position bridges the gap between behavioral intervention and academic success by reinforcing positive choices, restorative practices, and school expectations in a calm, supportive setting.
Key Responsibilities
Supervise and support students who are referred to the Reset / Responsibility Room for short-term intervention.
Implement restorative practices to guide students in reflecting on behavior, understanding impact, and planning a positive return to class.
Use de-escalation strategies and emotional regulation techniques to help students calm and refocus.
Facilitate reflection activities (e.g., Think Sheets, Restorative Reflection Forms, or brief goal-setting conversations).
Communicate with teachers and administrators about student progress, return plans, and ongoing support needs.
Maintain documentation of student visits, behaviors, and outcomes for monitoring and data tracking.
Support a positive school culture by modeling empathy, fairness, and consistent expectations.
Provide academic support as needed to help students stay current with classwork during short stays.
Collaborate with counselors, behavioral specialists, and teachers to implement individualized student supports and reintegration plans.
Ensure the Reset Room environment remains calm, clean, safe, and conducive to self-regulation.
Required Qualifications
Certified teacher or minimum 60 college credit hours with experience working with children or adolescents.
Demonstrated ability to build positive, respectful relationships with students.
Strong understanding of behavior management, restorative practices, and social-emotional learning.
Training or willingness to be trained in :
CPI or other de-escalation techniques
Restorative practices
Trauma-informed care
SEL and emotional regulation frameworks
